some would define patriotism as the love of and devotion to one's country, and the willingness to make sacrifices for that country.

That is incorrect. You confuse nationalism with patriotism.

Nationalism is the perversion of the virtue of patriotism.

In anycase this thread is pointless.

In reply to the question, "What is patriotism".

It does not require an opinion, it requires a definition, and that can be found in a dictionary.

    Pffft !   Waste of time.

Thank you for explaining the point I was making. To some it would not be quite so obvious.

    Re: what is patriotism?

does patriotism mean fealty to the government as opposed to fidelity to the government? does it mean absolute obedience? does it mean total sacrifice of everything you own and hold dear to the government? does it even mean allegience to the government.

    Re: what is patriotism?

patriotism is doing what is good for the country as a whole, not your particular little slice of the country. it means making sacrifices for the good of the country, not the good of any one group. this sacrifice is freely given by patriots every day. as evidenced by our all volunteer military, our incredible donations to charity by ordinary citizens, and by our willingness to help others in need.

it should not need to be mandated by law, but should remain guided by the individual. sacrifices for the good of others also requires that those who benefit from the sacrifices do what is necessary for those sacrifices to not to have been made in vain.

Patriotism is a feeling for everyone about his country.Patriotism is not just for soldires. It is for all civilians also.

It is not the matter what country gives you, the matter is what you give to country.
