2008 House Bill 5925 (Authorize a “small distillers” liquor license )

Introduced in the House on March 20, 2008, to authorize a “small distillers” license for businesses that distill less than 60,000 “proof gallons” of spirits. This license would allow the business to sell its product at retail at its own premises, and provide tastings. The license would cost $100

The vote was 105 in favor, 0 opposed and 5 not voting

    Good Start

Next step is to offer tax incentives for these distillers if they use Michigan grown products, as in grains, grapes, fruit. Reduce the state liquor tax that is one of the nations highest if these people crops grown in Michigan. There is no advantage at this time for them to do so and if the raw products are lower prices from large producers in other states they will use them. Even a one or two dollar reduction in the liquor tax for Michigan distilled products can make a large difference for our locally grown crops.
