    Mandates

Yet another mandate put upon the schools with NO FUNDING attached. Enough already.

    Unfunded Mandates

Plus the $$ for education in the proposed budget are currently tied to the number of grades taught in a district. K-12 is slated to get an increase, with schools with fewer grades (primarily charters) getting a lesser increase. The logic being that it costs more to educate students in a high school - where there are generally more students. If this proposed legislation passes, then there would be an even greater cost, contrary to what I've seen some legislators share with the press.

    And the money comes...

from where? School districts are already reeling from lack of funding and increased mandates. Stop making "feel good" legislation and start working on the real education issues: Fix the Prop A hoax; provide for long term equal funding for all Michigan school children; provide funding for adult ed for those who can't get a job because of skills; AND OTHERS. The list could go on but the bottom line is that legislators need to step up to the plate and make the hard choices. Michigans future depends on it.

    stop unfunded mandates

We need to stop sending people to Lansing that love to spend money! Let local school boards decide how many counsellors they need. One size does not fit all. One of the problems with unfunded mandates, is that sooner or later the taxpayers are forced to fund them -- either locally or through Lansing. Just say no!

I believe that the Headlee Amendment requires the state to fund mandates. Another idiot legislator wasting our money.

    Are you kidding!

The State of Michigan has mandated thousands of dollars of new requirments on ISD's and local school districts with out one dime of additional funding. Most of these are thru small changes in operating or reporting requirements when in total they become expensive to carry out.

    Heads Up

Heads up to all those folks who are monitoring the education section of Michigan Votes. There is a bill listed under the elections thread that, if passed, would require all the taxpayers of the state to pay for Detroit's school elections. As of right now there are only 2 comments posted about it. All those of us who care about education and education funding should be watching this latest attempt for special treatment (and a money grab from every other district) for Detroit Public Schools.
