    Tuition

There is absolutely no reason for the state to pay the tuition for kids under the poverty line to go to college. They can do what I and countless others did to afford the tuition. They can work their way through. My parents did not have the money to send me to college so I worked, saved my money and made payments. I took out loans, applied for every scholarship I could and applied for federal grants. There is no reason kids today can't do the same things. My children will be because we certainly can't afford to pay their way.

    it's funny, in it's attempt

to 'separate church and state' the legislature has seen it as wise to COLLECT TAXES from the religious, but to exempt them from payments. which means that if i CHOOSE to send my child to private school, that i have NO CHOICE but to subsidize the continuing education of PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS. how is this fair and impartial representation? it isn't. poor public school kids get a FREE RIDE at the expense of the people who are trying to better their children. and those people have NO CHANCE of ever seeing any of the money that they put into the program. why not just stick a gun into our faces and rob us THAT WAY?

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 861 (Authorize college tuition subsidy tax increment finance districts )

Senator Whitmer, under her constitutional right of protest (Art. 4, Sec. 18), protested against the passage of Senate Bill No. 861 and moved that the statement she made during the discussion of the bill be printed as her reasons for voting “no.”

    The motion prevailed.

Senator Whitmer’s statement is as follows:

Like many things that we have seen tonight, I was originally inclined to support this bill, but when the Senator from Holland got his hands on it, it changed dramatically. This went from a Promise Zone bill to a charter school bill, and this is a fundamental change in the bill. This type of gamesmanship is what gives lame duck the negative connotation that we have all grown to loathe. I am opposed to this bill, and I strongly suggest that you consider being opposed as well.
