Why Would Government Want Less Voter Participation?

Why would our legislature want referendums voted on by a lesser percentage of the voting population? Do they think it would be easier to sway people for or against certain matters if there is less voter turn-out? Someone needs to ask the right questions about the purpose of this bill! Lary Holland

    Slippery

Perhaps this Rep. has a good deal of "special interest" agenda he would like to get through.

    Very Suspicious-to-say-the-least!

Please inform me of the purpose of House Joint Resolution U (Move statewide ballot proposals to odd year election ). Why would you want to remove statewide ballot proposals from the even years where there is more voter turnout? Is this an idea to serve "special interests" at the expense of the general electors? It is my opinion that amending the Michigan Constitution to place statewide ballot proposals on odd years in order to have less voter turnout is very suspicious to say-the-least. Your proposal seems to serve "Special Interests" who will then turn out in droves in order to have their agenda not only pass, but in all probability undermining the general voting public-- who for some "unforeseen" reason could lack the knowledge of the ballot proposal/s.

    would you prefer he

'hides' it in the 'big' election? where no one will see it, and only those who are effected will vote for it?

    Hide?

While I'm sure there are many people who ignore the ballot proposals, it is very likely that some people (who aren't on the special interest group's mailng list) will see the ballot proposal for the first time. At least they'll have an opportunity to vote on something that could very well affect them. Otherwise, they'll end up hearing about the results on the news when it's too late to do something about the issue.

    Everbody Will "see it"

in the general election. They put these stupid things up for vote when nobody but the special interest groups show up, then when they have raise your taxes for some pet project they just say it was the will of the people. What these libiots very very closely, they are a sneaky bunch.

    there are those in

general elections who only vote for specific candidates, or issues, and 'let everything else slide'. these are the voters i worry about.

    I Worry About

the 40% of the public that aren't intelligent enough to tie their own shoes that are allowed to vote. I worry that our so called legislators are trying to let 17 year olds vote. I worry about them wanting illegal aliens and felons to vote.

    I like this

I like this because they are only asking permission for voters to decide wheter they like it or not. That is how it should be the vote to change the consititution will take place on a even year and as far as the 40% that can't tie there shoes. The majority of them are to lazy to get off the couch so I don't think it will be a problem. It's a shame that in a nation where we have the oppurtunity to direct our future we get 50% or less of people involved in the process that is why we end up with moron laws and moron legislators it really seems sad to me to take for granite such a great oppurtunity and responsibilty.I would like them to do the lotto idea everyone who shows up to vote is automatically entered for a chance to win a million.I mean we have to do something to get people involved and educated that is one of the things I love about this site it is keeping the heat on and keeping people informed if we just use it and get the word out about it.

    these are all tricks that

the democrats are trying to 'boost their numbers'. some have federal problems. keep your eyes on them anyway.

    our opponent doesn't

like it, because he feels it's not up to the people to give permission to impose capital punishment in this state, he feels it's up to the legislature. all he knows is, that his 'terror level' rises considerably whenever it's brought up to bring this issue to a vote of the people. he knows that his side of the arguement is in the vast minority, and he is afraid that if this issue comes to a vote, the majority will win and we will (FINALLY AFTER OVER 170 YEARS) be a capital punishment state. he is afraid to even try this system for, oh, let's say ANOTHER 170 YEARS to see if there are indeed any benefits that he is blind to.

    it Would Be Better

if less people voted. We don't need any of the Vote or die crowd that couldn't explain the difference between capitalism and communism if their lives depended on it. Lets get back to where only property owners vote. When you let people that are too lazy to get a job and off welfare vote do you really think that they will vote for what's right or for more money from the government teat.
  • 08-16-2007 2:17 PM In reply to

    that was put forward

in the first constutional convention way back when. it wasn't passed, so it isn't the law. but you are right, there are those who really shouldn't be able to vote themselves a slice of the treasury.
