    Counseling

You need to add that the parents are responsible for paying for the counseling.

    Fat chance

Under what conditions will a parent be "punished?" The operating assumption is that bad kids always come from bad homes. While commonly true, it certainly is not always true. I don't want to trust the courts on this one.

There is a problem, lets fix it!

Many times parents don't know where their kids are. Why is that? As a responsible parent you need to know where your kids are and have rules, boundaries and limitations set for the kids to follow. If the parents don't know how to do this, then there is counseling to help them develop a plan and work that plan. 3 months of counseling is a start. I'd rather not pay for another inmate at Jackson Prison but rather have a productive, responsible, and self-sufficient member of society that would not be a burden on an already over taxed system in this state.

    Jobs

We need more jobs. "It's about the economy...."

    I agree

There is however one problem many times kids end up on the wrong side of the law without the parents having any clue there was a problem. The counseling for the family might be a good idea but the $1000.00 fine is just a grab from the state to rob from the poorest among us because we all know the stats it is usually the poor families that end up with kids in serious trouble nothing is 100% but that is usually the case . The thing is we need common sense now and saving a child or attemping to save a child from a life of crime is always a worth while effort.I think the state can do this without this type of legislation that takes a bad situation and makes it worst.

Yes! And screen them for lead, fetal alcohol, dyslexia

    Please. Good bill.
  • 03-24-2007 2:53 PM In reply to

Yes! Make the parents WANT to know where their kids are so that...

they can be responsible for their actions OR ELSE! About time! We'd have less gang members if parents knew where their kids were and WHAT THEY WERE UP TO!

It's proactive in that it will wake some parents UP. Get your butt up off

the couch, get off the internet and GO SEE WHERE YOUR KID IS AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING. Put down the 40 ouncer or the meth pipe and visually check on them, do something with them, help them with their homework, SOMETHING!
  • 03-24-2007 2:56 PM In reply to

Yup! This is proactive. I like it.

    Good stuff.

    Beautiful, Rep. Shanelle Jackson

ACCOUNTABILITY! Either parents make it happen or they pay up. There is a CHOICE involved here. Get your *&*^*() together or we'll fine you AND HELP YOU! Merciful yet tough. I like tough! Do you know where YOUR kid is? Ought to be the new state motto!
  • 03-24-2007 2:59 PM In reply to

This should help with gang problems!

    I love it!
  • 03-24-2007 3:00 PM In reply to

Should be against the law to recruit kids into gangs, especially at schools

Let's work on that, legislators. Toughen' up!
  • 03-24-2007 3:03 PM In reply to

It's about violence and gangs, too!

It all goes together. Why would a business want to bring its PEOPLE here if it's not SAFE for them because of teen violence? Think about it. It's all connected.

    knowing where they

are is one thing, knowing who they are dealing with is another. knowing that they are probably going to lie to you about both is a reality that some parents fail to grasp. taking a look into juniors room every so often might just turn up a few 'gems' about the life he is living. look for the cigarettes, the drugs, the weapons, and the other things that you don't want in your house. this lets him know that you believe in "trust but verify". if you don't let him know you do it, you will have a much better success rate.

I'm all for the bill. Get off your but and check on your kid.

This will be good for all those parents that don't bother to show up at conferences to see how their kid is doing, what they are up to, who they ARE hanging aroud with. Sure many parents already DO, but they probably don't need to worry about their kids ending up in kiddy jail.

Can fine costs go toward counseling?

    ???

Hey, when's the last time a bill got passed in the state of Michigan?

Enough party politics. Could we do our jobs here?
  • 06-28-2007 9:49 PM In reply to

Good job. Do you know where YOUR child is?

Parents need to step up, and stop being so SELF-CENTERED.
