Another way to get money from cigarette sales

As an ex-smoker, I'm sure not in favor of smoking but this habit of using any and everything to come up with a new tax and/or a new fee!!! Come on! Quit shafting people with these clever, controlling ideas.

    This Is Just The Start

Twinkie taxes are coming. As soon as the booze industry blinks this too will get whacked. Look at Canada. As soon as you get government health care (that doesn't work very well) it opens the gate for the politicians to tax anything they can say is not good for you. Actually a good point can be made that smokers save the health care industry money. They are fairly healthy, then get sick and die pretty quick. fat people get diabetes, poor circulation heart problems and go to doctors all the time and linger forever.

    Sin Tax

Yes, smoking is bad. So are exorbitant taxes and fees! Stop the madness!! Pass a pay-cut for goodness sake! Cut some of the pork! Quit trying to take money from people who are going to need it to treat their emphysema!

This bill has nothing to do with restricting smoking, you socialist jackass. It's just another attempt to enforce collection of Michigan's punitive taxes. Thank goodness for the grey market.

My goodness, don't we have people monitering this for language?

There are some that think government allows people to keep smoking because it's population control and we are running out of resources and contributing to global warming. Keep on smoking buddy. We don't need you. You probably drive a SUV.

    :) A SMOKE FREE SOCIETY:)

Everybody's health cost would go down! Let's discourage smoking at every turn. Some parents just don't care about their kids enough to not smoke around them. Let's move forward in breaking this addicitve cycle. Oh, and our hair will smell good, too. BONUS.

    Reading The Last..

few posts has convinced me that this state is full of sheeple who want the government to control their every move. This stupid bill has nothing to do with smoking, it's all about money. Cigs are just a politically correct whipping boy right now. I would bet that a few of these folks that want total bans are fat. Just wait, the next thing to come down from the mount will be fat taxes. I for one can't wait. I am sick of having my nose assaulted by enormous smelly folks in the malls, on airplanes or sitting in restaurants watching them shovel food in the old pie hole. Also the big ones cost the health care providers way more than smokers do. Once you become a big person you end up at the doc's office lots more, poor circulation, diabetes, heart problems, fungus growing where you can't wash anymore etc. When you are in a hurry to give up someone elses rights look out because you're next.

It's about BOTH health and money. Nothing wrong with that.

    I support this bill.

I do believe leaders/government has responsibility to look after people

Especially their health. It is their job to think of other people's safety, especially children. It's time to take baby steps away from smoking. This is a step that happens to involve money. It think it's a good step.

You're right, we should have more fat screening in schools

I totally support that. It would really help future generations.

    Free BMI screening. Great idea!

A tax on fat? Perhaps. An interesting idea.

All You People Gone Mad? Repeat after me. I Am A Grown Up. I Can Take Care Of myself. I Do Not Need A Nanny. I Do Not Want The Government To Steal My Money To Tell Me How To Run My Life. Get A Life. If you want total security go rob a beer store and get thrown in jail. Nice cage, No smoking, No twinkies other than that, leave the rest of us ADULTS the heck alone and take your socialist aspirations with you.

    It Is Not

the governments job to protect you from yourself. If you want to climb a tree and jump out onto the concrete, not governments business. If perhaps you climb said tree and jump onto the hood of your neighbors new Hummer, governments business.

Sometimes it is! Human nature is a funny thing.

We are all connected. The actions of one can affect many. There are great parents. There are those that really could stand the handbook or a license or a test or a lot more birth control. It's time to ween the population off cigarettes. I don't care how they do it. I support a smoke free society and will support any legislation that moves us closer toward that goal. A good leader would do that even though it is not the popular thing to do. Good leadership is NOT a popularity contest. Leave that for high school. This is the real world, life, the bigtime. A girl I went to high school with is a credit counselor. She said the TWO THINGS people won't give up spending money out of their budget on is weekly church contributions and cigarette consumption. Doesn't matter if they have to declare bankruptcy or they don't have proper health care for their child. They won't give them up. Something to think about. There are parents making poor choices to smoke around their kids and not saving for college or providing proper health care for their children because of cigarette consumption. I am saddened by this. It is wrong.
