    Labor for Unions

Don't make this like the South. Low living standards.
  • 03-03-2006 7:24 AM In reply to

    Not exactly

They may make a little less but they have all the jobs. The unions are turning into big money sucking political machines. Don't trust the union any more than you trust the governor. When all the jobs are gone try getting your union to feed you.

    As if...

...a $115 million dollar bribe, er, I mean "incentive" isn't enough to sway a company's decision to stay here and help sustain the standard of living? Like the status quo isn't doing enough to help drag down the standard of living with less people working? Besides, whatever happened to freedom of association? Are unions afraid that if people are allowed the choice of whether of not to belong to a union of their own free will, that most people won't choose to belong to a union?

    MIDDLE CLASS WORKER

I AM THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED IN MR. DROLET WITH THIS H.B.5771 AND 5772. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT OUR REP. SUPPORTS MACOMB COUNTY, WHERE MANY UNION WORKERS LIVE, WORK, AND VOTE WOULD INTRODUCE SUCH A BILL. ITS TIME ALL WORKERS, NOT ONLY UNION, BUT EVERYONE, START LOOKING AT THE ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO COME UP WITH THESE BILLS SUCH AS MR. DROLET AND RESEARCH ALL THE PERKS, SALARIES, PAC DONATIONS, AND "OTHER" THINGS THAT THE POLITICIAN GETS.

    no choice?

don't i get a choice as to where i spend my money? what if i think i can spend it more wisely than the union? if i have to be required to join a union,(in other words, i have no choice but to join) can unions be such a good thing?

michigan constitution,  article 1. Sec. 6.

Every person has a right to keep and bear arms for the defense of himself and the state.

    Bill doesn't eliminate unions

This bill doesn't eliminate unions. It just eliminates the requirement for people to join. If unions are such great things, people will join anyway, right? They won't need to be coerced. Unions are scared by right to work because they know that people are smart enough to see that union bosses make more than any member will ever see and new employees won't join unless coerced.

What has your union done for you lately?

Union members, look around. Other than the dues deducted from your paycheck every week, what has your union done for you lately? What do you have that your non-union friends don't? In my office, the non-union employees get their raises every year. Our union fights and battles and we went without raises for 2 years. Now they settled for what the non union people got 2 years ago. We're at the same payscale now, but we lost 2 years of raises. My union cost me about $1,600. I'll bet the business rep who drove up here from Detroit to negotiate for us got his raises the last 2 years. It didn't cost him anything to give us the shaft. I'd gladly opt out if I could, but Michigan doesn't give me that choice. What a rip-off.

Weren't auto unions formed when supervisors BEAT employees working too slow

It was the Depression and people were desparate for jobs. Supervisors walked the assembly lines with sticks beating those that worked too slowly and if they complained they were told there were people lined up outside the door waiting for a job which there were. They didn't form a union until conditions became unbearable from what I have read. The auto industry has the Ford plant to thank for unions I think. If my history is wrong, I'm sure I'll be corrected, but that's what a read in a history magazine. The Ford family has done a lot of great things for Michigan and my grandmother swears we are related to Gerald Ford (born a King) but there is just a little FYI in union history.
  • 06-17-2006 2:16 AM In reply to

    yes, they were,

but sweatshops on the east coast had unions just a bit longer than the automobile industry. now, unions were formed to address certain conditions found in factories and workplaces that no longer exist. nowadays, the only purpose of a union seems to be to get a democrat elected. thats what they spend the majority of my money on.

    Look At America

If right to work states are bad, why are their economies booming. Look at Atlanta, Indianapolis??? I am up for it!
  • 12-28-2007 12:38 AM In reply to

    Have you been to ATL?

Are you sing that low living standards means JOBS and a thriving ECONOMY. I am a Democrat, but I cannot support a party where each Blue (union) state has weak economies were as Red (right to work) have thriving economies.......
  • 12-28-2007 1:34 PM In reply to

    so, why do you support

the very party that has caused all these problems? unions are not the solution they were a hundred years ago, in fact, they are the very problem that takes billions out of the economy. there is a reason that so many states have chosen to be 'non-union'. unions would like you to believe that they are 'for the little man'. they are not. they are all about getting democrats elected, period. democrats would like you to believe that unions help the 'little man'. did the union help you get your job, or just provide another obstacle to it? did they help you keep your job? no. in fact, they demanded that you pay them a portion of your hard earned money (sort of like a TAX ON WORKING). do they make the economy any better? no. the only way they help any economy is to spread some of that money around during democratic election seasons. can you honestly say that hillary would get michigan out of the current 'slump' that we are in? can you honestly say that obama would? michigan has slumped through the best economy that this country has seen in a very long time. it's problems are unique to michigan, as the other states don't seem to be 'slumping'. it's called a ONE STATE RECESSION. democrats can only seem to get elected where the economy is doing the worst. why is that? how much more money could YOU make if you didn't have to pay union dues?
  • 12-28-2007 8:33 PM In reply to

    why would someone

purposefully CHOOSE a union? unions take money out of the worker's pockets. they provide NOTHING in return for this money. the only thing this money is going to pay for is getting either hillary or obama elected. if you want insurance from the union, you have to pay them MORE money on top of what you already pay them. wouldn't it be SMARTER to just go out and BUY INSURANCE? is it A SMART THING TO pay the union to let them allow you to work? and to think, this stupidity has been going on for over a century.

    every other state has

a more thriving economy than this one. could this be that we are against any business that doesn't put out shiny new cars? or is it because we are against ALL business?

"could this be that we are against any business that doesn't put out shiny new cars?" That one will be gone soon. "or is it because we are against ALL business?" Now you're getting warmer. The socialists forget that after you tax everyone out of a job then you will need a new income stream. Plan B is just calling us serfs and telling you where to live, work etc. Once we get to this point even the usefull idiots will see that what they have been doing for a long time is creating a socialist state. I Told You So.

    why does

michigan NEED unions? there are no sweatshops. there are no 18 hour days. there are no underage employees. there are no 'workhouses'. none of those things exist anymore. the unions whine and complain that the workers will get shafted if the unions go away, then they shaft the workers for union dues. imagine how much money the employees could keep out of their paychecks if they didn't have to pay union dues. they complain that the 'bad old bosses' will pay the employees less money, then they make the employees pay union dues to keep a job. imagine what the employees could afford on that smaller paycheck if they didn't have to pay union dues. they complain that the employees don't get insurance coverage, then the charge extra to give the employees insurance AFTER the charge them union dues. imagine what kind of insurance the employees could afford if they didn't have to pay union dues. i keep hearing what MIGHT happen, but never what HAS happened. right to work states have more jobs than michigan. there is a MORAL there, the unions just don't see it. good paying jobs are leaving michigan in droves, going to right to work states. there is a MORAL there, the unions just don't see it. employees don't need the kind of 'protection' that the unions used to offer. there is a MORAL there, but the union slugs just don't see it.

    i take it you've never

been down south. the standard of living is very much higher there than here. without unions, employees can put more of their hard earned money into the things that make up their own personal version of the american dream.

    Union's are a wage loss

If you are a skilled laborer working in a union you have no choice but to accept the wages the union decides for you. With the "right to work" the wage could be negotiated. Those who work get paid. Those who choose to sit idle by go home.
