What's going on with this bill? Testing for lead in water?

Great idea! Need more education in various media about what to do when you have lead pipes and what years they stopped making them.

    About 1920

Relax. This is just another imaginary bogieman for the government to scare your money out of your pocket with.
  • 04-25-2006 10:54 AM In reply to

It was NOT 1020, and the government is protecting you

Lead pipes stopped being made around 1977/8. Does anyone know the EXACT answer?

We have LEAD service pipes for water supply? Seriously?

That can't be good. What do scienctists/doors say about that? Is flushing water ADEQUATE? Is there a ban on lead service pipes for water? Have they stopped doing this?
  • 05-27-2006 2:29 PM In reply to

No wonder state test scores are low? Lead service pipes for water!

In our Capitol city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is the world coming to? Wonder what doctors have to say about this? DEQ? EPA? Something. Have we been given the all clear on this. WOW! ANY FOLLOW UP REPORTS on the NEWS? Introduced by Sen. Virg Bernero on May 26, 2005, and disclosures to require municipal and other water suppliers to perform testing for the presence of lead or copper in the water, and establish standards for the testing. Also, to require a supplier to notify households that it knows to be served by a lead water service line. The bill was introduced after news reports were published indicating that a number of older houses served by the Lansing Board of Water and Light have lead service pipes, and that residents of these houses should flush their pipes daily before drinking the water. Referred to the Senate Technology and Energy Committee on May 26, 2005. How is this coming?

    how many?

how many gallons of water will you have to flush out? how many thousand feet of lead pipe are we talking about? and I thought that the cyanide in the water was the worst problem...

That is the question. Now isn't it?

That's kind of the point, to force us to look at those numbers and start asking questions at least. If you want to hold teachers/schools accountable for test scores, fine. But BRAIN DAMAGE from lead poisoning is a serious issue, so give a kid a fighting chance. It just makes sense. Employers and potential employers considering our state complain ALL the time about our workforce. WELL, let's DO SOMETHING about it. Maybe the cost is to high to replace it all, but at least citizens should be INFORMED of potential danger. Let them have the choice of MOVING if there is a danger for goodness sake. Don't pull the wool over their eyes. Whenever anyone suggested that we end slavery, many responded that it couldn't be done because it would ruin the economy of the South. Couldn't be done because of those devestating financial results. It was just the right thing to do morally. Addressing this lead issue as OPENLY as we can and putting as much money into seeing what we are really dealing with here is the moral thing to do. There are MANY who believe that the fall of the Roman Empire was due to the chemical reaction between their lead wine goblets and the wine. They eventually got stupid and crazy. We need to look into the lead in the water issue and be upfront about it.

    why did they wait???

ok, we've know that lead was bad for hundreds of years... the state/county/city knew the pipes were made of lead... (they put them in) so... they waited all this time to say something?!?!?!? oh... wait a minute... they STILL haven't said anything about it. they must not want you to know... so much for the government looking out for our best interest...

Look, buddy, I'm tired of you dissin' my state! The moment as a teacher...

I brought this lead thing to someone's attention, there were all sorts of bill addressing it. Governor Jennifer Granholm has signed many of them. Volunteers have gone door-to-door trying to educated folks. And NO we've not ALWAYS know it was an issue. Took us a while to make the connection is all. The Romans weren't smart enough to figure it out, obviously! If you don't like it here, I've got some extra boxes you can have.
  • 05-28-2006 9:44 AM In reply to

    when do they begin?

to hell with sending letters... get the heavy equipment out and start replacing the lead pipes... oh... i forgot... sending letters and going door to door makes everyone FEEL BETTER... solve the &*($*#^@%#^$& problem.

    dissin my state...

ok. lead pipes are bad, always have been... i didn't put them in... the state did. my point was that YOU had to bring it up to THEM. you have to know what a problem is to fix it. they KNEW what the problem was, and STILL haven't fixed it. the fact that you let them know about the problem is a good thing, at least YOU are concerned enough. are THEY????? OBVIOUSLY NOT!!!!! it's not dissin to tell the truth, whether you want to hear it or not.

Well, I'd like to see that, too, sure. Need to know levels in the water.

Need to know the TRUTH. Truth in government. A value in our ss curriculum. That's what we teach our little citizens. That's the only way a democratic system really works. Need to know the data and the cost of replacing pipes. Need to test the kids in that area (blood/hair) to see the history of lead in them. Takes a little time and probably some serious cash, but you're right. It should happen.

MICH educated ME! Had fine HISTORY & SCIENCE classes! I put 2+2 together!

THEY sent me to Washington, D.C. to study government as a child. THEY are not PURE EVIL. MAYBE somebody SOMEWHERE was sitting on that data, some government employee, BUT there were enough moral people/legislators in our state government to RESPOND when I said something. It is NOT a perfect system, but I see the glass as half full.
  • 05-28-2006 10:07 AM In reply to

    good...

they sent me,too... now, lets talk about that "civil servant" who sat on the info... the state is not pure evil, certainly, but it IS evil. not just THIS state... EVERY STATE. money and power corrupt. when i went to washington, i was taught about rights, responsibilities, and FREEDOM. things that people here seem to have traded for financial security. he who trades freedom for security... DESERVES NEITHER.

They're not evil. Just misunderstood. Like Darth Vader:)

I think as our biological sciences grow in Michigan, so will our respect for the environment and what we do to it and how our "progress" affects the human body. Change in understanding and attitude takes time. It's not going to happen over night. Sorry. Our young people are getting it more and more I think. There are a few bad apples for state employees, but I think our legislators work hard, very hard as a whole, and there is enough balance to make things work.

Government for the people, by the people...You don't just elect, employ and ignore for the term. That's not the democracy model. They're human beings and SOMETIMES humans don't do what is best for the people, they do what is best for the pocketbook or their friend or their business or their friend's business, or for their best chance of reelction or the path of least resistance BUT...I am pleased with the response when it was brought to the attention of the people with the most power. I guess I'm a realist about human nature.

good... finally... an OPTIMIST sees a glass that is half full... a PESSIMIST sees a glass that is half empty... a REALIST sees a half a glass of water. a politician is the one to took the other half...

    A Rare Kernel Of Wisdom

“WE are the government” Which is exactly why we get fouled-up laws and poorly executed public services. WE, the mainstreamers, too often quietly sit by and cede the forums of debate and public policy decision-making to the most strident bullies among us, who all too frequently are self-centered dunces.

    quite...

this isn't the only place i'm trying to IMPROVE... i may have to TAKE being treated like crap, but i don't have to LIKE it. the people of michigan have been very friendly, helpfull, and outgoing, hell, i'm planning on marrying one. it's not the PEOPLE of michigan that i have a problem with... it's the "i'm gonna tax you to death" mentality of the government around here. THAT'S what i have a problem with.

I don't think it was always like this, taxes not as necessary

We LET THE JAPANESE COME OVER AND TAKE PICTURES OF OUR PROCESSES in some parts of industry. I wonder how many of us did it. How many companies would stand up and say, "GUILTY!" WE ignored quality control in many areas and they built more relieable vehicles with quality control. With global warming people want a CLEANER car. With gas prices people want a more efficient car. China will work for less. For them it's an upgrade in lifestyle, I suppose. If you live in another state not as dependent on manufacturing, then you're saving money buying Chinese manufactured goods at Walmart. If you're a Michigander, then these changes are affecting you financially. I really don't blame the governor. I'm realistic about the choices that have been made over the last few decades. The results are cuts, taxes, fees. Sorry. I don't think we're doomed. I think there are things we can do to get aroud these roadblocks. Water is more essential to life than oil even. Keep it clean. Think longterm. Have priorities. We'll be ok. We can turn this around. I suppose without that background of "the way it was" you might wonder about us.:)
