As the daughter of a union organizer during the 40's and 50's I totally disagree with HB 4284. Unions should not automatically be allowed to take PAC funds from any employee's paycheck annually, unless the employee gives permission.

No one knows what can happen from one year to the next. What if an employee disagree's with what their union supports? What if we become a Right to Work State, and the employee decides to no longer belong? I can see lots of intimidation, and consequences involved when an employee tries to stop the PAC deductions.

Again -- I believe in individual choice - not mandates and dictates.

gee, jman. why couldn't YOU figure out that unions are a bad thing? i'll guess you'll change your tune when the unions don't use that PAC money to ease the suffering of displaced (fired) union members.

when they don't cut political campaign contributions after the 'rainy day' money is all used up.

or when the unions are finally investigated for the pack of thugs that they are, and need to use all of your 'rainy day' money for the 'legal defense fund'.

one of these days, when the call of 'GIMME MY CHECK!' is answered with 'NO!'

This bill is not only applicable to Unions, as the title of the thread indicates, but applies to corporations as well. It would need an affirmation from the individual to automatically deduct PAC money. I see no danger in anyone giving money for a cause they do not support. This would just make it easier for unions and corporations to collect voluntary contributions. Here is the wording of the bill.

"A corporation organized on a for profit or nonprofit basis, a joint

stock company, a domestic dependent sovereign, or a labor

organization may solicit or obtain contributions for a separate

segregated fund established under this section from an individual

described in subsection (2), (3), (4), or (5) on an automatic

basis, including but not limited to a payroll deduction plan, only

if the individual who is contributing to the fund affirmatively

consents to the contribution."

Tell them once, and get it over with. Why have to go through the rigamarole of repeatedly having to say "no"?

Even withy this proposed change, money could not be diverted into a PAC except by the employee’s or member’s permission. It only eliminates the need to obtain that permission annually.

That is a reasonable change in the law.

This is such an obvious money grab by the union in collusion with the government lackeys who help them fleece us. As usual, the citizens of Michigan are the biggest losers.
