Sorry so late to the party - just signed up on this site this last week. I would guess we need even MORE stupid laws because the government can't put 2 and 2 together. The government has data showing who is on assistance, the government also has data on who has won the lottery (or should I must add). From a simple data analyst's perspective you simply match the two pieces of data and "OMG" you should get a match! You then get the person on the government dole to repay to the government the assistance they have received and immediately cut off any future assistance. If our government does NOT already have this capability then we are paying way too much taxes as they are way behind the times with regards to technology. I am suspecting that is the real case and that is why we should not let government run anything more than they have to! Can't wait to see how they bungle health care . . . Be ready for more beauracracy and more inept management of something that should never be in the hands of any government!

Honestly, anyone who won the mega-millions and still had the audacity to collect a welfare check ought to be locked up! Kind of surprised this bill was even necessary.

Senator Gregory, under his constitutional right of protest (Art. 4, Sec. 18), protested against the passage of Senate Bill No. 712 and moved that the statement he made during the discussion of the bill be printed as his reasons for voting "no." The motion prevailed. Senator Gregory's statement is as follows: I rise in opposition to this bill because it puts the wrongly-conceived DHS policy of imposing an asset test for food assistance in the statute. As three former budget directors who have worked for both Republican and Democratic governors--these budget directors are Robert Emerson who worked under Governor Granholm, Don Gilmer who worked under Governor Engler, and Mary Lannoye who worked under Governors Engler and Granholm. They have all come together and have all stated that this is the wrong policy at the wrong time. Many receiving food assistance are the newly jobless who have never had to avail themselves of government assistance before. These households are more likely to have newer cars, houses they can't sell but also can't afford to live in, and modest savings. An asset test forces people to choose between selling a car they might need for transportation and feeding their family. Forcing people to liquidate their modest assets, namely any savings, also hampers families from avoiding poverty for getting back on their financial feet. With 900,000 households required to file documents on their assets, the paperwork alone will place a huge burden on the DHS caseworkers, who already are assigned more than 900 cases each. Twenty-nine states do not apply an asset test for food assistance because they recognize the important role assets play in ending poverty. With the economic situation as it is in Michigan, we should not be one of the few states that impose this limitation now. For all of these reasons, I rise in opposition to this bill and ask that you join me in voting "no."

This is a NO BRAINER, anyone with any morals at all would reimburse the state the funding previously collected.

If this was actually going to be considered as a bill:

The first part of this bill should be to ban all welfare, period!

The second part of this bill should be to ban all lottery, period.

This bill is ignorant; therefore its author(s) is ignorant! Someone is not using his or her time wisely!

Do thge sponsors of this bill actually believe lottery winings are ignored in determining eligibility or assistance or are they just grandstanding so they can tell the electorate they just plugged another hole thathelps stop "welfare cheaters"?

Give me a break, just how stupid do they believe the electorate is? Or are they so mentally challanged they actually think DHS and the feds never considered this.
