NO MORE TAXES! I paid for my education by working and with student loans, it didn't kill me and it won't kill anyone else. If you work for it you appreciate it more.

I find myself agreeing with you jphodge, although of the many programs taxpayers in Michigan support, providing college education to it's residents would be one of the better ones. The details of the bill are unworkable though, such as the requirement to stay in the state four years after graduation, and you make an excellent point about our manufacturing base.

Maybe it's just semantics, but words matter, and as such, the word "underclass" has no business being used to describe hardworking Americans. Blue collar, working class, or middleclass would be much more accurate and pertinant to our democracy.

As the current debate for the federal government to provide health care rages on, here we have a bill to fund college tuition. It is an attempt to get more people into college and then force them to stay in the state for four years to pay the increased income taxes which is a part of the program. What will be next? When we recognize the growing underclass and their increasing inability to provide housing and nutrition, will the government propose to increase taxes and provide them food and shelter? Then we will become as China and the Soviet Union were 25 years ago when they were considering the benefits of becoming like us. If you want to solve the problem of affordable college tuition, health care, and the basic necessities of life, you need to increase national protection policies including the raising of trade barriers and tariffs to get the manufacturing jobs back. Dismantle trade agreements and require any company doing business here to adhere to our labor and environmental regulations everywhere else they are doing business. People would not be lacking in health care if the manufacturing jobs were here. The underclass would be able to provide the necessities of life if the manufacturing jobs were here. Recognize that some are not suited to college and that a great nation and its states will have a place for them to contribute and earn a living. Therefore, everyone would not have to go to college, and if the manufacturing jobs were here, in them would be the place. Do not fund college tuition. Do not increase income taxes to cover the cost.
