Re: 2011 Senate Bill 619 (Repeal restrictions on public “cyber schools” )

I was very happy when Governor Snyder lifted the cap on charter schools, as I strongly support more viable options for parents and students. But - we cannot stop there. We must also lift the cap on virtual charters here in the state and show the "naysayers" that cyber charters are not only run by for-profit groups (although right now, that is all there is in Michigan) and do really have the best interests of our children in mind. In 2009, our Michigan based, non-profit educational consulting group, AIDEC, applied for a cyber-charter with authorizer Grand Valley State University (GVSU). We had (and still have) over 500 parents eager for our school to open and the support of many community leaders across the state (including local school administrators, teachers, and businesses). Our application was rejected by GVSU; who replied that the state was not prepared for a cyber or virtual charter and yet; six months later, GVSU approved an application for a cyber-charter that was opened by a for-profit, out of state group. During that period of time, the state placed a cap on cyber-charters or virtual charter schools in the state. Thus, we have been unsuccessful at applying for our virtual charter (to any authorizer), due to the cap. If this cap were lifted, Dara-Oak Academy would once again have a chance at helping our non-traditional students, who at the moment are in limbo. Our founding members are parents, educators, instructional designers, and business managers. All are highly qualified in the field of education. Our main goal is to provide a quality 21st century education to students based on individuality, respect, and responsibility. Our curricula and assessment framework is strongly based on a research driven and proven plan that focuses on 21st century skills and critical thinking. Our instructional design model is one that has been used with success for over 15 years; especially in high-risk educational settings. With the 2012 Quality Counts report showing that our state is graded at an overall "C+" (http://www.edweek.org/ew/qc/2012/16src.h31.html?intc=mrs) and with a "D" in K-12 Achievement, it is imperative that we allow more cyber-charters in our state to improve the quality of education offered to our children. Specifically, non-profit ones that show the MEA and the "naysayers" that Michigan is not just about the "bottom line". That would be us, Dara-Oak Academy. Michigan's children and parents deserve another option; not everyone is "cut" out for traditional educational settings. Why should we punish them because the state made a bad choice to only allow two for-profit cyber charters in three years ago? Please vote to lift the cap and allow non-profits a chance.

Cyber schools enjoy all the financial benefits of traditional “brick and mortar” schools without the need to supply busing, athletics, meals, arts and music, etc., much less an actual physical building with its upkeep and maintenance. This means they get the allotment of over $7,000 but don’t have to spend it on much of the overhead incurred by our public school districts. This, of course, means big profits for the companies that run them. MBA essay editing

Cyber schools are good for people that work and don`t have enough time to attend classes, I learned a couple of days at a cyber school till I found ways of making money online, since then I have a good monthly income and I decided I don`t need to learn anymore. It`s good that the senate wants to regulate this, too many cyber schools can create a lot of problems.

Why? We are on a digital or cyber age, so it's fine to take school in a cyber world. As long as you know what you are learning then that's fine. I think it will favor me for I'm a busy Tampa injury attorney, and a mother of two and I am willing to enroll my kids in the cyber school.

You can, virtually, get a complete education while sitting in front of your computer. Cyber school (or virtual school) is an educational process that allows individuals to take all, or most of, the required courses for a degree, diploma or certificate online for prestigious careers. Although there are many choices of online non accredited courses and tutorials, both free and fee based, the term "cyber school" generally refers to an accredited school. This type of school leads students to some type of degree, diploma or certification.

It is no longer a matter of science-fiction, online education is here and the fast changes in technology help it evolve faster than traditional education, while learning from it constantly. I think that in a few decades online education will be more widespread than the traditional one.
