Only if they can produce reciepts for the entire period they may be subject to audit.

Oooh, that's great.  Can I get a tax credit for things I buy for my job too?  No?  Well then this seems highly unfair, and it should be killed asap.

This bill should include all educators, including private and parochial.

It saddens me that private and parochial teachers are not included in this bill.  Why are these teachers being treated differently? Private and parochial school teachers dedicate their lives to teaching their students in the same way as public school teachers.  We too spend a great deal of money each year on items for our students and classrooms.  This bill should include ALL educators!!

     Dear Mr. Irwin,

I have been a classroom teacher for over 20 years, and I have put hundreds, and probably thousands of my own money into my classroom.  Unfortunately, under your proposed bill, I, because I'm not working in the public sector would not be able to take advantage of your bill.  This I don't understand.  Please explain to me why teachers who work in a private school are any less deserving of a tax break.  We need the same education, work the same hours and get paid less money, but can't get a tax break for our classroom.  That really makes no sense at all.

Please reconsider and add ALL teachers to your bill.  After all we ALL vote don't we?

    Sincerely,

    Terri Szukhent

6th gr. teacher, Holy Family School.

And you probably have an expense account where you get reimbursed for items like this.

I was very disappointed when I read the bill excluding teachers who teach in nonpublic schools. Many times our budgets are small and the children's needs are great. Most teachers,be it public or nonpublic, spend a considerable amount of money in their classrooms to purchase materials to help our kids and it seems we all would benifit form a tax break. Please reconsider adding our Michigan nonpublic teachers as part of this bill.

Do the things you buy get used by you, or do they go directly to someone else who benefits, with no benefit to you whatsoever?  I think that makes the difference.  Teachers are not going to be looking for credit on a new briefcase or ipod.  We're talking about basic student supplies like crayons, paper, chalk, books, etc.  Freelance folks get to write off their purchases for business.  People who donate to charities get to write off those donations.  Teachers are donating their money toward a charity, too:  poorly-stocked schools in MI!  I think it IS fair.

I am also in agreement that this bill be extended to include private school teachers.  They are doing the same thing with their money.  Receipts should be required, as with any charity or business write-offs.

I agree that this bill should be opened up to parochial and private school teachers.  We also spend a lot of our own money to supply our students with adequate materials for learning in the classroom.  Please consider adding non-public school educators to this bill.

As a teacher (myself) I salute this law because I am not forced to come up with even more ways of making money only to cover my usual expenses. Hope teachers are going to get even more love in the near future !
