2011 Senate Bill 99 (Ban salvia divinorum and catha edulis )

Introduced in the Senate on February 1, 2011, to define salvia divinorum and the plant catha edulis as a schedule 1 controlled substance, meaning it would be in the same illegal drug category as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, LSD, marijuana, etc. Salvia divinorum, also known as “Diviner’s Sage,” is a psychoactive drug that is ingested by chewing or smoking. Catha edulis, also known as “khat,” is a plant that reportedly produces mild stimulation or intoxication when its leaves are chewed

Before we add to the controlled substance list, we should remove marijuana.  All you idiot lawmakers in Lansing, and for that matter, Washington, need to remove your heads from your hindquarters and wise up.  Instead of wasting millions of taxpayer dollars annually on pot "enforcement", let's legalize, regulate, and tax pot.  It would generate many millions of dollars in revenue.  And no, I haven't smoked pot for at least 30 years, and I may not start if it is ever legalized.  Do any of you have the guts to bring this forward?  I doubt it.  Most of you haven't had an original thought or stepped outside the party line in years.

That's just what we need, the Free to be You and Me Marijuana Farm.   You better read up on the scientific and medical information before you make any comments.  Marijuana is a gateway drug.   We have enough drunks on the road right now.  Do we need more?     It's great that you have not smoked pot for at least 30 years.  What are you using in place of it?

The new drugs are killing people left and right.  They need to be banned now.

Re: 2011 Senate Bill 99 (Ban salvia divinorum and catha edulis )

Banning doesn't reduce use.  Banning just gives criminals control of drugs.  Ever heard of the prohibition of alcohol? That didn't work and neither are the prohibition of other drugs.  Why aren't we trying a different approach?

15,000,000 people in the USA have been imprisoned because of marijuana use.  Marijuana is a gateway drug to what drugs?... It is a proven gateway drug to tobacco, which is serious killing 400,000 people a year.  Marijuana is not a proven gateway to harder drugs like cocaine or heroin.  It even has not been proven to impair people's driving ability.  Thousands of years of use and there are no reported deaths due to marijuana consumption.

Prescription drugs, cigaretts and alcohol are the only drugs killing people left and right.  Two thirds of prisoners are there for drug related activities.  A huge amount of police work is devoted to these offenders instead of fighting what I would consider real crime.

Some drugs definitely need to be controlled.  Things like heroin, PCP, MDMA, Crystal Meth cause long term psychological and physiological damage and need to be heavily warned against.  Things like Marijuana, Mushrooms, salvia divinorum, catha edulis, peyote, these drugs have long been a part of peoples' cultures and have shamanic religious roots.  To completely ban them with threat of a prison sentance when there is little or no evidence for long term consequences is non-sensical and a breach of our civil liberties.   Do we really have the money to be snooping around to see what shamanic plants are growing in people's gardens?

I don't smoke cigaretts because of what I learned in middle school and high school about what damage they do to people's lungs.  That's all you need to know about successful drug policy.  Let facts fight the drug war, not police.  Treat addicts in clinics not prisons.  Compassion can solve are problems much better than fear and disinformantion.

    Regards

I think by now we should all be aware of the kind of drug salvia really is. It's a hallucinogen and it comes other side effects that nobody wants for their health. Making the drug illegal sound just about right especially now that I found some statistics about it on this San Diego drug rehab centers resource. We can't afford the luxury of not staying informed anymore.

I hope other countries will have the same attitude towards this drug. I've seen how things evolve right in front of my eyes. My roommate used to smoke salvia divinorum and not long after that he stopped being impressed by salvia and started using harder drugs. He was unapproachable and so convinced that he plays safe. The last time I heard about him he was in a heroin addiction help center. There are thousands examples like him...

Re: 2011 Senate Bill 99 (Ban salvia divinorum and catha edulis )

Salvia divinorum a heavy psychadelic which can be used as sacrament.  It isn't something people should use as a legal alternative to marijuana or alcohol.  Education and rehibilitation are the best and most humane ways to stymie drug use and demand.  Banning just puts drugs and money in the hands of gangs.  The US spends 40 billion anually on drug enforcement with nothing to show for it.  If we'd put that money instead into rehibilitation and education, we'd reduce use and lower the number of people in jail.  Just look at the numbers of reduced use of tobacco.

It finally happens. Salvia is still perceived as a light drug but I've seen what it can do. Some friends urged me to try it because it's so much fun but I don't see any fun in loosing your brain, it doesn't make sense to me. I recently read some articles about the rehab cost and surprisingly it's not as high as many would think, it shouldn't be that difficult to get support if they really wanted it.
