Considering the current employment situation, with thousands of construction workers and home builders facing bankruptcy, would you supplant private sector employment with prison labor??? There are plenty of manufacturers of modular housing units-IN MICHIGAN!!! - that would be more than grateful for the work and would help to jump-start the economy! Prison labor should be used solely to self-support the prison system and to provide goods and services to the State and local governments . . . .farm migrant labor housing does NOT fall into that category!! Our prison farm system USED to grow much of the food for both the prison, local jails and non-profit hospitals in Michigan-the system was done away with. Repeatedly we see these suggestions for prison labor to subsidize private industry by supplanting local employees . . . .there's a fatal flaw in the entire thought process here! If modular construction isnt what is wanted, the 'Katrina Cottage' construction package can be bought via big-box home improvement stores and put together by local construction independent contractors-once again supporting the local economy. This is actually nothing but a farm subsidy to a select group of farmers-primarily the fruit industry. It's bullpuckey!
