This is not a brain dead idea. It's not like they are trying to put a 6% tax on your groceries- that would be brain dead (and some states DO do it). They are wanting to place a tax on services- did you even realize that you DON'T pay taxes on services? Services are non-essential stuff (unlike food), such as getting a haircut, etc. PLUS, it sounds as though they are lowing the sales tax to 5%, so it will actually make more things cheaper. For instance, you would only pay 5% on toilet paper, laundry soap, clothes for your kids, etc. But, then you would pay more for your haircuts, the labor on car repairs, your tax accountant, the travel agent, etc. It's a more than reasonable bill. I'm all for these "small" changes to the tax structure. It spreads the load out over a great number of people. I also didn't mind the idea of paying 1 penny more for soda pop! (but some people complained about it- seriously!). I also liked the idea of placing a tax on entertainment. Again, it's not an everyday need. If you're going to spend $20 to go to the movies- you can afford to chip in taxes towards the state running smoothly. If you can buy a concert ticket for $200, you can chip in on taxes! Just don't expect me to pay 10% taxes to buy milk, bread and cereal!
