    Not a great idea Mickey.

This will set a very dangerous precedent and open the door for sales tax to be imposed on all food purchases.

It never ceases to amaze me how you completely ignore the plight of the people who are hurting in this state. Constantly trying to figure out a way to raise taxes in this economy with a 10.6% unemployment.  Before you raised the Income Tax and the Michigan Business Tax the unemployment was 7.6% and you still haven't figured it out.

But this coming from a guy who once said and I quote "Well Medicare is free health care, isn't it?"; well it just doesn't surprise me anymore. Good luck trying to get people to put six cents in that vending machine for that $1 candy bar or can of pop.

in addition to the idea that we now are taxing food, there's a big problem in this: vending machines would all have to be either modified to accept pennies and have new software installed to compute the sales tax. The only way to avoid this would be for the verdor either to raise prices and pay the tax  out of it or lower their profit ratio. Both bad news for consumers and small business.

These constant piddling little tax grabs add up to huge tax increases for Michigan residents and the so-called tourist trade this state purports to be courting. I have the distinct impression that this legislature cant see the forest for the trees-how can you say you want business and tourism yet constantly engage in tax robbery of these same individuals?

the truth is, gal, that they DON'T want either tourism OR business, as they have constistantly worked to drive both away.

I believe you're right: this legislature is infested with termites who are too busy 'protecting the environment', 'social engineering for our own good' & garnering perks for their friends, special interests and pet industries. Just watching some of the brilliant legislative effors that show up on these pages reminds me of the product of a three-day college drinking binge where the collective intellience has devolved to the lone sociology major who just read Marx!(they cant ask the economist-he passed out yesterday!).

God, I am sick of them!

Of course they won't have to add pennies, the vendor will raise the price by ten cents so the net effect to the consumer is 10% on a dollar item instead of 6%.  Heck maybe the vending industry is lobbing for this increase!

i'm sure that SOME vendors ARE supporting this bill, it will mean more profit for them. they are also PRAYING that sales don't decrease because of this bill. i know the machines at the borders don't seem to be doing much business. could it be the HIGH TAXES placed on the products IN THOSE MACHINES?

This legislation is ridiculous on its face.

What next, tax bake sales or kiddie lemonade stands?

The Senator who introduced this bill is frivolous and petty.

    I am against this legislation.

oh well. if you don't know... i guess you admit that you are ignorant.

how are you going to pay for universal healthcare if you don't raise a few taxes? how can you be against high taxes and be a socialist? those taxes need to be re-distributed, don't they? high taxation is necessary to fund the myriad of social programs you say are necessary. it's your ideology, not mine. you know my feelings on taxation.

does your ideology slide like jman's?
