2007 Senate Bill 799 (End state CCC and use money for other state spending )

Introduced in the Senate on September 23, 2007, to appropriate $20 million from the Michigan Civilian Conservation Corps Endowment Fund to the General Fund as a measure to close the gap between expected Fiscal Year 2007-2008 revenue and spending in other areas of state government. This would have the effect of essentially ending this Depression-era program, which now pays some 18-to-25 year olds minimum wage to perform certain support activities in state parks. The bill does require the Department of Natural Resources to seek other ways (such as corporate sponsorships) to extend the program

The vote was 36 in favor, 1 opposed and 1 not voting

(Senate Roll Call 372 at Senate Journal 98)

    Don't do it

This is one of the few government programs that has done much to help the citizens. I know many people, including my Father that had many good things to say about it. Don't get rid of it! I am certain the money used for this would be wasted on some already useless program that is paid for by the few remaining taxpayers in what once was a great State.

    Useful Program ...

In 1940. Not so much today. This was a make-work program done to keep young men busy and earning pocket change during the great depression. If you can't get rid of this now, when will you be able to?

I am glad to hear the young men of Michigan have lots of "pocket change" and are very busy.

    CCC Endowment

This is another stupid stop gap measure to plug holes in the budget. Why doesn't the legislature simply tell all the youth in the State of Michigan that "we don't care about your future. we want to play politics".
