2007 Senate Bill 677 (Repeal underground fuel tank cleanup gas tax )

Introduced in the Senate on August 22, 2007, to extend the deadline for those claiming reimbursement for underground fuel tank clean ups. Money for these comes from a 7/8ths cent-per-gallon "regulatory fee" (tax) imposed on the sale of petroleum products. Originally this was used almost exclusively enderground fuel tank cleanups, but in 2004 Public Act 390 extended the 2004 sunset on the tax until 2011, and began a practice of using much of the revenue to pay for other government spending

The vote was 36 in favor, 0 opposed and 2 not voting

(Senate Roll Call 642 at Senate Journal 87)

    still haven't learned

It amazes me that you folks continue to play games with money you have collected for other purposes. If I am not mistaken when Dick Austen was Secretary of State, and you people in Lansing needed money he loaned it to you with interest. If you dont need the money for its intended purpose, then give it back to the people that pay it, and try to get the money for your new boondogle. Or extend the TAX and change it to reflect the latest bit of wizardry that you are trying to pull on us. This just shows me that a tax will never end if you "elected" folks have your way. You will always find someone to hire, or something not necessarily in Our (the taxpayer)best interest to spend it on. If you cant get the money for your budget, then I guess you will have to do like the rest of us Peons and cut something out. Wake up and smell the coffee please.

    Thank you, Michelle

Thank you for proposing the repeal of this temporary tax, which should have expired in 2004. This is the right direction, and I appreciate and acknowledge your efforts.

    "journal statement"

Senator Garcia asked and was granted unanimous consent to make a statement and moved that the statement be printed in the Journal. The motion prevailed. Senator Garcia’s statement is as follows: I just wanted to thank the department for their help with this bill, which I sincerely mean. There was an issue in the industry. They came to us with this problem, and we were able to work with the department. They were very helpful, and I just wanted to pass along my appreciation.
