    More wasted money

Maryland has tried this for years. At last report, the Maryland State Police want to drop this, as it has not, so far, helped to solve one single crime. It is a totally worthless project, and is a waste of time and money to even consider it.

    Head up your ars

Why don't you require EVERY car made in the US to have a BAC blow tube in it so there won't be any drunk driving. Are you related to the Coleman Young that drove Detroit into the dirt?

    Look out

The NRA will have a field day with this and they should. Coleman, this is not California. Quit wasting our time.

    HB 5059

Junk Science. It's no surprise this Bill has no co-sponsors ... yet.

    Yea, Right, Uh-huh!

Million mommy/Brady bunch "feel good" legislation that has no bearing on crime solving. Who votes for these people?

    Not paying attention

Has Rep. Young been paying attention? This has NEVER solved a crime. The term "fingerprinting" is a misnomer, because while a person's fingerprints don't change all that much throughout their life, the ballistic markings that a gun makes on bullets and shell casings can change a LOT. It is also easy to defeat. Still, let's just say that it works well enough to lead authorities to the registered owner of any gun. Since most crime guns are stolen, what good will this do again? This needs to be defeated, and Mr. Young needs to seek employment elsewhere.

    Since when has

wasting time and money been a concern for politicians, especially those from the Detroit area?

    Might we assume that

Rep. Young has as little knowledge of all other matters that he deals with as he does about guns?

This will go nowhere so I'll just shut up.

Coleman, did you do your homework?

You should look into issues BEFORE proceding. The Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division has called for scrapping the state's ballistic imaging program, the Maryland Integrated Ballistics Identification System (MD-IBIS), stating it has found the system to be an ineffective tool for law enforcement. The program has cost the taxpayers of Maryland more than $2.5 million, but has produced no results. "There have been no crime investigations that have been enhanced or expedited through the use of MD-IBIS," the report says. "The program simply has not met the expectations and does not aid in the Mission statement of the Department of State Police."

    Time Waste

It is time that representatives start establishing meaningful legislation instead of dreaming up more junk like this. To propose legislation to build a platform to run on is non-productive work. Start representing the state of Michigan instead of a small minority of gun grabbers.

    More wasted money

I will agree with it is a waste of money and also time that could be used to pass something that will work like doing away with the GUN-FREE-ZONES which we all know will work. Even California is starting to find out that Ballistic fingerprinting will not work do to it is too easy to defeat. Rep. Coleman Young why don’t you do some research and find the true facts be fore making yourself look like a you know what. The saying goes engage BRAIN before opening MOUTH. I urge you to read the information on ballistic fingerprint”

    we should drop all

registration schemes, as they do nothing to fight crime, and only tell the authorities where the guns are so that they can be easily confiscated. don't say it doesn't happen. it happened several times in california, and in new york, and as recently as two years ago in new orleans for katrina. the law enforcement agencies didn't even give a reason for doing it. and it was only done in one parish (county). this leads to THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE who have had their property confiscated (stolen) without due process. no trial, no hearing, no recourse, no nothing, accept to do without a weapon which you paid for. some were worth thousands of dollars, some were museum pieces worth millions. all were destroyed. if you want to see this same thing happen here, just support the gun grabbers in the next election.

    does coleman young

have a vested interest in disarming the population? does he have stock in HANDGUN CONTROL INC.? he certainly toes the democratic line of 'gun control at all costs'. his idea of gun control is gun elimination. he hasn't read, nor does he ever plan on reading either the united states, or the michigan constitution. he only want US WITHOUT GUNS.

    I wonder

I wonder how many crimes are stopped or solved because of current registration laws my guess is very few.The thing is only law abiding citizens use the registration program the people who wish do wreck havoc on our society do so through stolen and illegal guns all these laws do is enpower the criminal and create a bigger black market. The time of prohibition in this country taught us some great lesson the problem is politicians must have slept through history class or they would know that if people want it they will go through whatever means are neccesary to get it drugs, guns,or whatever. This country has a serious black market that brings in as much money as legal markets this was all created by the government and their unending lust to supress the people.I hope this legislation goes nowhere it's to bad our state legislator have to waste our tax dollars discussing garbage like this. The other note is if tobacco laws continue in the direction they are heading it will be the next item added to the untaxed black market people are already pursuing other avenues for their tobacco wants to the point where the governor stepped in and had people prosecuted.

    my reply.

someone posted this. "I wonder how many crimes are stopped or solved because of current registration laws? [absolutely none in my seven plus years of law enforcement. in fact, they added many hours of labor and levels of difficulty.] my guess is very few. [your guess is very nearly correct.] The thing is only law abiding citizens use the registration program. the people who wish to wreck havoc on our society do so through stolen and illegal guns. [again, you are correct. whether a gun is registered or not makes about as much difference as whether the car they steal is registered or not. the only difference is that stolen CARS are returned to their owners, if possible. stolen guns are destroyed.] all these laws do is enpower the criminal and create a bigger black market. [registration has not stopped or slowed down gun thefts in this or any state. they still continue. it is not even a help in figuring out who's gun has been stolen, as the state has no intention of ever returning a stolen weapon that has been used in a crime.] The time of prohibition in this country taught us some great lessons. the problem is politicians must have slept through history class or they would know that. [some politicians are hoping that YOU slept through it too. they want you to voluntarily give up your right to keep and bear arms, it makes their job of disarming you THAT MUCH EASIER.] if people want it they will go through whatever means are neccesary to get it drugs, guns,or whatever. [the criminals will have weapons, they will always steal them. it seems that the only thing that registering guns does is makes the criminal's job that much easier. it's also not surprising that local police officers are 'selling' this registration information to the theives.] This country has a serious black market that brings in as much money as legal markets. this was all created by the government and their unending lust to supress the people.I hope this legislation goes nowhere. it's to bad our state legislator have to waste our tax dollars discussing garbage like this. The other note is if tobacco laws continue in the direction they are heading it will be the next item added to the untaxed black market people are already pursuing other avenues for their tobacco wants to the point where the governor stepped in and had people prosecuted. [if you tax it, they will buy it from someone who doesn't. if you try to ban it, they will buy (steal) it from someone who doesn't.]

michigan constitution,  article 1. Sec. 6.

Every person has a right to keep and bear arms for the defense of himself and the state.

    i've been looking

on the internet, and i can't find ONE crime, or one country that can find one crime that has been solved by gun registration. that includes the united states, canada, england, australia, new zealand, all of europe, none of them. no country will admit that there has been A SINGLE CRIME solved by gun registration, yet, we STILL HAVE GUN REGISTRATION. i wonder how much this TOTALLY INNEFECTIVE LEGISLATION HAS COST THIS STATE SO FAR? i wonder HOW MUCH IT IS GOING TO COST US BEFORE WE GET RID OF IT?
  • 08-05-2007 8:05 PM In reply to

    This doesn't work.

This effort to solve crimes has never worked and never will, so why is Rep. Young introducing this bill? The cost to the state of Michigan would be enormous. We don't need it. This is a bad bill and should not even be heard by any committee. It would be a waste of time.

Some Lawmakers Not Up On Current Events?

Director of the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division: "There have been no crime investigations that have been enhanced or expedited . . . The program has been in existence four years at a cumulative cost of $2,567,633." New York's system hasn't fared any better. There have been no matches reported so far to guns used in crimes, and the annual budget for the system is about $4 million. California Attorney General Bill Lockyer issued the report "Feasibility of a California Ballistics Identification System" which concluded that there are significant problems with the technology of such systems. Research has demonstrated microscopic marks are subject to change over time, especially during initial use of a new gun. The relevant parts of a gun "fingerprinted" (bolts, extractors, and firing pins) are EASILY microscopically altered with common tools and abrasives. Unlike actual fingerprints, significant changes to identifying marks occur. And the changes are inevitable, through legitimate use, cleaning, and gunsmithing if not by intentional disfigurement. I think Honorable Young should have been a bit more diligent in educating himself on this matter, before putting out this proposal which would lead to an ineffective and expensive boondoggle.

    Unbelievable

There are over 20,000 gun related laws in law books throughout our Country. The problem is that, now I know this may be hard for some people to understand, Criminals don't follow the law. There are already so many guns on the streets that would never be "fingerprinted" that it would literally be like a needle in a haystack to use this technology, at a cost of millions, to solve a crime. Enforce the laws we have and continue to allow law-abiding citizens the right to defend themselves.

    why all this ranting about....

Detroit? The only reason that so many of the subburbanites dislike Coleman Young was because he didn't take crappy comments from the subburbs about Detroit lying down. He called them on it, and told them if thats how you feel stay out, if that pretains to you so be it. Where do you have to come to see your precious Red Wings......Detroit, where do you have to come to see the Tigers.....Detroit, where are people tired of the bullsh**t comments from ignorant people who don't even live in OUR city....Detroit. Remember if you think the city is so bad JUST STAY home, we only want people who want to uplift the city, not the sloppy leftovers.

    where would the money

come from to aquire the equipment necessary to implement this program? the HUNDREDS of specialized microscopes? the HUNDREDS of cameras? the HUNDREDS of trained technicians? the ACRES OF STORAGE SPACE to maintain those pictures? the bureaucrats to keep it all moving forward? the money would come from the fines and fees imposed on owners of legal weapons when they were found to be 'not in compliance' with the new law. this bill is another attempt by the liberal legislators to DISARM THE POPULATION by legislating away our rights. not only should this bill not pass, any supporters should never be re-elected.

    That's one

of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Do you realize the resourses it would take to do this? We can't keep track of child molestors let alone a gun. Geez!
  • 11-21-2007 2:10 PM In reply to

    this sounds like

another attempt at gun control. why is the state so concerned about gun control? reducing the amount of guns in law abiding citizen's hands, and making those guns harder to aquire will only harm the law abiding citizens. the criminals already have guns. you can't take those away, so why do you work so hard to take honest citizen's guns away? who's side are you on anyway?
