2007 House Bill 4921 (Revise repeat drunk driver offence penalties )

Introduced in the House on June 13, 2007, to require the Secretary of State to suspend the drivers license and require an alcohol detection ignition interlock device of a person who has prior convictions and is convicted of drunk driving. If the person has one prior conviction within seven years, a suspension would up to two years and the interlock device would have to be installed for at least two years; if two prior convictions, up to a three year suspension and the device installed for three years; if three prior convictions, up to a five year suspension and the device installed for five years. The first 45 days would be a “hard suspension” (not even allowed to drive to work). Under current law, the "hard suspension" for repeat offenders is one year, but the bill's mandated interlock period provisions do not apply

The vote was 107 in favor, 0 opposed and 3 not voting

    Let people drive to work

Yes. You were wrong and made a mistake but that does not mean that you should not be allowed to DRIVE to work. At least let people WORK. Most people don't want sympathy but they would like to be able to drive where the courts tell them they must go for treatment and work keeping them productive to society. Many people have been at the same job for years and have never had a problem with attendance. Now, they could lose their job and have to go on the Wefare. There is not public transportation everywhere so you have 2 choices, drive to work and break the law or lose your job.

    let me drive to work

My last conviction of DWI was back in 1997, my license is still revoke to this day. I am 35, married and have 3 children. I have a good paying job that I need drive to every day. I have been caught driving 3 times and the SOS now has my license revoke until 2015. How am I suppose to pay my bills, feed my family, and live a good life without the right to drive a car legaly? This new law would let me do just that. When and if this new law passes I will be the first one in line to have the interlock installed on my truck. I cant wait for the day when I car drive a car legaly and not have to worry about being stopped by the police. The old laws has cost me jobs, promotions, thousands of dollars, and I think my sanity.

What is Crime? What is Punishment?

"2015" wish you the best! I am allowed to request a SS hearing after march 03, 2008. stopped consuming march 20, 1999 or the day after my third 0.14. (1983 0.14, 1992 0.14) stopped to remove light covers, turned lights off, received assistance.. sobriety is a life experience. three cost me job, 40th in jail whats wrong with this picture? Me.. not drinking after 20 drinking? how about not. No work eight years no license no job. no job no need for license I vividly get this picture. Made the mistake of driving, left turn after 40 year intersection re-designed, sober, five years added, would have got the same punishment if I was drunk. Oh yah, single luckely no others suffering cept 80 year old parents that have to drive their unemployed 49 year old around. Used to teach problem solving, easely applied to my life. Step 1 List problem completely. Step 2 List all possible solutions/options, best to worse. Step 3 apply best. Step 4 evaluate. Problem solved? if not, next solution and so on. I have no options or solution. Welfare good luck? Jail I could get three squares, clean clothes, cable, internet, have a real life. What crime against society should I commit this time surely it might be one where I could possibly have my debt viewed as payed in full and nothing to do with alcohol. No, I dont think so I'll just live in a box on the corner or a nice dumpster.

    revoked licenses

i agree with all the above. i have a husband that has a revoked license...has to drive to a job so he can pay child support. 2 weeks before hearing...got a ticket for "no turn on red" not eligible for 5 years again. ridiculous thing is he is not drinking. how does the state expect people to live. its barbaric. he would pay anything to have a license to drive to work...so what is it....break the law or work?? horrible choice

    Stop It

You Morons. The drunk driving thing has been done to death. How long are you going to beat a dead horse just to get votes from stupid people that think you are actually "doing something" to help out. Read the statistics. The problem is almost non existant anymore. Get out of bed with the madd muthas and quit filling each others wallets. You people are pathetic. My fondest hope is that some day you will have to get real jobs and see what it's like here in this socialist police state you have created.

"SUB-STANCE abuse. taking a stance for a nother chance

I so much agree especially in Michigan where there is "NO MASS TRANSPORTATION" bad economy, but yeah lots of sports and will they care about the injured workers and players who don't know how to manage their pain after YEARS of bodily abuse what Michigan cares about the most (abuse) of people's lives ,athletes and workers as long as they can perform, and when they run into physical difficulties and use pain killers, then they wipe their hands of it, and come up with laws to so call protect the public-- the select public. I SO MUCH AGREE

    The REAL War

what about the VETs on their return home to a place where you may not be able to drive, work, eat or sleep; where your "INDIVIDUAL" rights are ignored while you are so called "FIGHTING FOR YOUR COUNTRY"; what about the individual? where is the "REAL" war zone. ALL that is cared about is :FINES", FINES, and lock up and pay for your TIME"

    i agree

i agree that these laws need to be changed,i am on my 2nd drinking and driving. i am going to rehab and A.A,went before the courts told me to,but having to pay someone to take me back and forth to work is killing me.this state isn't getting any better with jobs and such, so for me to pay my bills,i have to pay for the driver and also put the overpriced gas in my car.i made the mistake of driving,i was wrong, but i wish the state would realize that people have to have jobs. i would pay fines and such for 5 years if they would allow me to drive to work now.

I just won a SOS hearing

Well, I guess you can call it winning. I went to the SOS without a lawyer and was given a restricted license but I have to drive with a brethalyzer.

    I agree

the laws keep changing. Jail cost society how much? Then depression is without treatment. Then another drunk driving. Without treatment it cost residents, RESIDENTS, EACH...of Michigan $2500 per year. Yep thats right. Treatment facilities have a much better chance to cutting recidivism than jails and perhaps setting society free of the bill. Jails destroy people. We learn how to commit crimes better with out getting caught by our fellow inmates. The dui laws are setting people up for more failure. I agree with the penelty for the first and second dui but the 3rd or 4th..,...don't you think there is a problem? Come on Government!!! Get a clue. You are the anti christ !!!!

    Jail Them For Life

This is another problem that will go away when freedom is gone and the nannies get to decide everything for you. No more booze, No more personal responsibility. No more choices. Just let the chosen few decide everything.
