2007 Senate Bill 371 (Repeal pistol “safety inspection” law )

Introduced in the Senate on March 22, 2007, to repeal the crime of having a pistol that has not been presented to the local law enforcement agency for a “safety inspection.” The bill is tie-barred to Senate Bill 370, which repeals the inspection requirement. A person would still be required to obtain a license to acquire a pistol

The vote was 36 in favor, 0 opposed and 2 not voting

    You kidding me?

A safety inspection at the purchase of a firearm is a great idea. If someone buys a sifunctional firearm as a use for concealed carrying, this could be dangerous if it is not inspected. This guns could g off when in its holster or what not. This could hurt other people or the carrier themself. If one needs to use in a self defense situation, if it does not fire, it does no good, or the gun could literally explode in ther person's hand. Saftey inspection of firearms needs to stay in affect.

    you obviously haven't

read the earlier posts on this subject. the pistol "safety inspection" is simply a registration scheme, as it plainly states on the paperwork you fill out that it DOES NOT CHECK FOR SAFETY. a safety check IS a good idea, but this is a safety check in name only. in other words, if you have an UNSAFE GUN, the guy at the counter will still register it for you. he has no clue if it's safe or not, and it's not his job to find out for you.

    have you had a

weapon "safety inspected" here? i did. the nice officer looked at it, recorded the serial number, my name, my social, and my address. then he ran my name on the computer to see if i had any 'local' charges that might keep me from owning a gun. i asked him when the 'safety inspection' was going to start, he laughed and said that 'they don't check for safety, we just re-register the gun and check you for locals." then i was directed to read the back of the paperwork. as a seven year law enforcement officer, i fully understand the importance of a safe weapon. this state does not inspect for safety, they simply re-register.

    So what's the deal?

Is anything happening with this? This needs to pass. The Safety inspection needs to go the way of the Dodo bird.

    No idea

You apparently have no idea what a 'Safety inspection" consists of. It is nothing more than a registration scheme. I have never seen anyone do anything other than take down the serial numbers of guns I took in for "inspection".

    Good idea?

Do you own a pistol? The so-called inspection is anything but. No function or safety check is performed. It is simply a recording of information.

    No clue

The person favoring the "inspection" apparently has never had a gun "safety inspected" by the police. Yes, it is not a bad idea to have a gun checked if you know nothing about them. On the other hand, if you don't know anything about them, why are you buying one? Take a class on firearm safety, then take the gun to someone who knows something about them-like a gunsmith-not some 18 year old file clerk in the sheriffs office.

    your kidding

If you lack the knowledge on whether your fire arm is safe or not you shouldn’t carry. If you think it its unsafe take it to the gun shop and have it inspected. Or let me guess you have to be told what to do. Grow up and take responsibility, you should take a gun course I am guessing you haven’t from your remark.
