Tipped Minimum Wage = Non-tipped Minimum

Whomever supports this bill does not understand how the tipped minimum wage works. EVERYONE gets the new minimum wage and this includes tipped employees. If their tips do not make up the difference then the employer is obligated to make sure they are receiving the current Non-Tipped minimum. The enforcement is rather straight forward by cross referencing labor reports with wage and earning reports through the MESC. There is no need for this Bill unless you want servers making $25-$50,000 working 30 hours per week to make an additional $3,000 per year. This is enough to put restaurants out of business and severely decrease the entire work force in able to compensate for the additional labor costs. In an average restaurant with 10-15 servers this would mean job cuts to dishwashers and cooks to the tune of up to $45,000 per year: about 3 full time employees. The reason behind this is due to not being able to eliminate service/servers to maintain customers. You can however make a dishwasher clean more and a prep cook process more: sad but true. Do not even consider this bill. Hard times and the new minimum wage has already cost this industry the equivalent of the increased labor costs. Check your unemployment figures for this indusrty...it is all right there.

    poverty-stricken waitress

Why would anyone think a server/waitress does not deserve a raise. With the rising costs of gas, food and utilities it is getting as hard for me to make ends meet. I work every extra hour I can to make it. People who have not waited tables have no clue to what our job entails. We make the drinks, salads, and deserts. The walls, floors and bathrooms are cleaned by a waitress. We prep and we clean anything that is considered front of the house. All this and more is done while I am waiting on customers. Who, by the way is the most important aspect of my job. I strive to give my customers great friendly service. Most customers do seem to appreciate it. Still, there are those customers that tip at or below the minimum rate. I have to claim every tip I make. Yet, I can not claim a loss. Trust me as times get harder the losses are getting more frequent. Those who say we do not deserve a raise have never done my job or are a business owner looking out for themselves. Walk in my shoes for a day and then tell me I do not deserve a raise!
