2007 Senate Bill 212 (Enact Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact)

Introduced in the Senate on February 20, 2007, to enact into Michigan statute the terms of the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact, which includes a ban on new diversions of water outside the Basin with limited exceptions, and would empower a council comprised of delegates from the signatories with authority to adopt regulations to enforce the compact, but these would not have the force of law unless member states adopted their own regulations. Essentially, the new compact repeals the veto that Michigan and each Great Lakes state currently has on diversions of water to outside the Great Lakes basin, and replaces it with restrictions on water use both inside and outside the basin. Note: Michigan is the only state entirely located inside the Great Lakes basin

    what?

What are the "exceptions", and what good is this if it depends on the member states and dont forget Canada has a say in this too, adopt a set of rules that is completely opposite of this?

    Another

Since I don't have time to study all the gibberish these fools put out, I can't say for sure, however, this appears to be one more way to keep business out of Michigan. One of the things that has drawn business to MI in the past is the abundance of water. Now we can't use that either.

    It's Kinda The Same

as we are doing by keeping all our oil off limits so we can pay $4 a gallon and make the bad guys rich. Not sure this liberal agenda is anything but a foreign plot to bury all of us. Two penny jenny did the model in michiganistan and it seems to be working toward their goal quite well.

    Not strict enough

Although in concept, this bill appears to control water diversion and withdrawal, in fact it does not control water diversion at all. If you want to draw off 5,000,000 gallons per day ( a ridicously large amount), all you need is a $200.00 permit. Allowable reduction in flow of cold water streams is up to 50%, accepting a 'anticipated' level of fish kill. Unfortunately, what kills one fish will likely kill them all. There goes Michigan's $$$. Again.
