I know you don't realise it now but in a few years you will thank the judge fo what he has done. The best thing you can do is pray that your grandson will use the time he is in prison, see his past mistakes and change his walk in life.

    I agree

I am a rape victim and I do still agree with good time and early release of inmates . We are all human they do deserve second chances to. I hope God softens your heart to pass this bill just as well as God help me forgive my assaulter . God have given me more than a second chance and I am sure he did for you all to . Take care and God bless.

Can we get site stats? It would be powerful to see the number of hits on certain issues. If you can put in a name search engine.

    my side

i have to say i agree with giving prisoners good time back because of the fact that how do you expect a person to act if they dont have consequences? if they dont have a reward system it will never work. they dont have to do good for their own behalf they have to behave because they are told to do so... which immediately as we all know isnt going to happen. its like putting a kid in time out they dont really feel any remorse for what they did because they dont have really anything taken away just a few moments of their time which is already taken away anyways (as far as convicts go). i think if good time was given back they would actually think about what they are doing before they do it because they all want to go home. my fiance is an inmate and he has gotten one ticket and that was the only one for 3 years. now what he shouldnt recieve anything? its a hard enough to stay out of trouble when you are constantly around it but i think he deserves good time he has not fought once or had anything major happen that shows that he is a "menice to society" and im sure there are more guys in there just like him that deserve it as well.

This would be a great ideal to introduce this bill to give the man and women hope in their lives. They would be able to set goals to making corrections to the mistake made in their pass. Everyone needs a chance for change.

    Changes coming to MichiganVotes

Dear Friends: In a few weeks MichiganVotes will receive a new look and several new features. Check out the MichiganVotes 2.0 "beta" site at http://beta.michiganvotes.org/. Note: There are known glitches, and any comments posted there will disappear when the actual site goes live in the next couple weeks. The centerpiece of the new site will be to move conversations like this one right onto the home page via a full-feature discussion forum software package. More than anyone else those who have engaged the prison reform issue have demonstrated how a community of passionate interest can come together on this website. The new features will enhance that. I want to get your input on one likely change: Don’t you get weary of mostly talking to “anonymous user?” Most websites require registration and a username to post comments. We haven’t in part because the current site doesn’t “remember” you, and requires users to log-on every time they open it. The new site will “remember” you. As is common with most interactive websites registration requires giving an email, but the Privacy Policy posted under the “About this site” link (left side of page) says this: “MichiganVotes does not release (nor has it ever released) to third parties any personal identifying information of past or current website visitors, including registered users, without express permission, except as required by law.” What do you think? Please e-mail me directly with your views. Regards, Jack McHugh mchugh@mackinac.org

on this site, you hear from lots of people who don't log on for one reason or another, but if anonymity wasn't a right,we COULDN'T post without logging on. now, what difference does it make to you to know to whom you are speaking? the only differences it could possibly make are that you have to make your 'points' stick, and you can't make personal attacks.

as any post with which you disagree? or perhaps any post which speaks the TRUTH from the conservative point of view? are these the only posts you find offensive? others here don't mind offensive language as long as it's coming from their side, the left, but not from the other. the truth is something they find very morally offensive.

    Good Read...

For years, I've called for the complete shutdown of America's massive archipelago of mandatory government youth propaganda camps. The defenders of this Largest Jobs Program in History shriek and bellow that I must be "against education," which is sort of like charging those who opposed slave galleys with being against ocean navigation. Read de Tocqueville for his amazement at the high level of literacy -- including an ability to discuss complex political issues -- found among American workingmen of the 1830s -- 20 years before Dewey and Mann launched today's government-run youth camps on the Prussian model in Massachusetts in 1852. The New York Times reported Feb. 27 that fewer than half of American teenagers know when the Civil War was fought, and one in four believe Columbus sailed to the New World some time after 1750. About a quarter of the teenagers were unable to correctly identify Hitler as Germany's chancellor in World War II, instead identifying him in a multiple-choice test as a munitions maker or premier of Austria. Why is anyone surprised? The academic curriculum is the "cover," the "front." The real goal is not to ensure, but rather to ensure against successive generations developing a cohesive philosophy of self-sufficiency, a code of ethics appropriate to a free people living under a government of limited powers. The goal is to make sure successive generations are powerless to muster the historical and economic context, logic and critical thinking skills necessary to see through the latest scheme to seize yet more of our wealth and use the loot to hire more bureaucrats to regulate yet another portion of our lives, our industry, our commerce. California's 2nd District Court of Appeal on Feb. 28 declared the parents of most of that state's 166,000 home-schooled children to be outlaws, ruling the law requires parents to send their children to full-time state-certified public or private schools or else have them taught at home by "credentialed" tutors -- which most home-school parents, presumably, aren't. "California courts have held that ... parents do not have a constitutional right to homeschool their children," Justice H. Walter Croskey said in the 3-0 ruling, which makes it clear those parents can be criminally prosecuted for failing to comply. And did Judge Croskey and his black-robed ruling-class pals say this was because the home-schoolers weren't doing as well at teaching reading, writing and 'rithmetic? Of course not. They couldn't say that, because tests consistently shows home-school kids, taught by parents without state "certificates" or licenses, score 30 to 37 percentile points higher than their public school peers across all subjects. So why ban home-schooling, if the academic results are far better? Judge Croskey obligingly explained: "A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation as a means of protecting the public welfare." Imagine that. "Loyalty to the state." Almost as if what they're running are, I don't know ... mandatory government youth propaganda camps, or something. VIN SUPRYNOWICZ

it is truly amazing that the wandering herd of trolls seems to have dried up when forced to be 'exposed to the sun' by logging on? i am against releasing inmates early because it SOLVES NOTHING. it only transfers what we have to spend on inmates to another department of government. if inmates WERE becoming productive citizens upon their release, i'd feel a lot better about that.

why don't the democrats work harder on that one?

Scroll back to the first page of this thread, and look at the very first entry. You will find a link to the bill's MichiganVotes summary and to the bill itself on the Legislature's web site.  Current status of the bill is that it continues to lie in committee, where it has been without action since introduction in 2007.

Don't bother looking for information to extract from the pages of commentary in this topic thread.  It is one of the most thoroughly trolled topics on this site.

please tell me why he shouldn't do his entire sentence?

    1. was he sentenced far too harshly for the seriousness of the crime?

    2. is the law that he broke written as a 'catch all' to simply fill the jails with warm bodies, and thus be a source of revenue for the state?

    3. was he FACTUALLY INNOCENT but incarcerated anyway?

4.was the law that he broke written as an attempt by some legislator to DO SOMETHING, even though nothing really NEEDED TO BE DONE?

i give these choices because they represent REAL REASONS FOR REFORM, not just personal opinions. these are the things that i see wrong with michigan, and it's twisted system of laws, rules, and regulations.

it seems as though the "WINDMILL LEGISLATORS" will write anything into law as long as it makes them look like they are earning their paychecks.

crimes are crimes, none should be punished any more harshly than the sentencing guidelines require, and certainly should not have "added time" for being the crime of the month.

this silly notion that sex crimes are more heinous than murder is just that, a notion. this silly idea that 'profile crimes' and 'hate crimes' are to be sentenced more harshly is to lose sight of the rule of law.

what makes me laugh is the rantings of the liberals here that say that CERTAIN CRIMES should be punished most harshly, but SERIOUS CRIMES, like murder, should always be forgiven, no matter how heinous.

having your loved one in jail for a frivolous reason is bad, but simply letting him out WON'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM THAT GOT HIM THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

STOP LETTING THE LUNATIC LEFT THINK FOR YOU. ASK YOURSELF WHY THIS PERSON IS IN JAIL, IF THE ANSWER IS BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT THEN YOU NEED TO LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR A CAUSE TO CHAMPION.

    Re: Bills 4262 & 4263

A bill is only as good as the people that are suposed to follow them. For 11 years I have been going into a prison facility and found that nearly every inmate is serving time because of crimes they have comitted. In the 11 years I seen one inmate that did not comit the crime he was convicted of. Because of drug use I have seen good men that  have made bad choices. After reading many of the coments on here about inmates serving their time and getting released. Many [and I do mean many] inmates are not released because of one reason and I am sorry to say it is called "JOB SECURITY".

the problem i have is "bob" did a misdeamenor which would of only gotten him 1 year, but because he had 3 felonys in his record from over 20 years a go when he was a teen, like breaking and entering with a friend, got him 7 years. the question is but none were not even related to those 3 cases, which is a obititual offender.i thought obitual offender meant the same crime? but he is innocent on this charge and has been fighting it for 3 years,4 more to go. any comments on this.

When is this bill going to be addressed?  Look at Cali, they are letting out 40% of their imates.  Michigan is crazy to keep all of the our men in prison.  Is it a racist thing or what.  The most in prison is African American Men.  Give these men the help they need and assist them with a good job, and watch them turn their lives around.

we charge over a hundred dollars a day. texas charges eighteen. we don't have a death penalty, texas does.

we get less for more money. why is that?

When is this issue going to be addressed and time off for good behavior be instituted, there has been so much talk about this and yet nothing has been done about it.  time is wasting here.  There are very good men and women who have done their time, who are ready to enter back into society to  live the life they were meant to live but are being still being held there.  They cost over $35,000 a year when if they were out, being with their families they woudl cost the system and the state nothing.

     td,

i don't think this bill is going to be considered. early release is the least popular of the options for the legislators to consider. one of the most popular is cutting costs per inmate.

the option of early release is unpopular because it makes the administration look 'SOFT ON CRIME'. the fact that we charge ourselves more than forty other states makes us look as if we are innefficient. they'd rather look innefficient.

Why don't Rep. George Cushingberry step in and say something about a bill that has been sitting the house for 2yrs now.  He has introduce this bill and to me it seems a race card is being played in the government of Michigan.  It was just bought out how the elite party is very racist  within the white house, when it comes to our minority leaders in position.  This looks like the case here in Michigan.  Look at all the bills which has been just introduce and address already.  Who introduce these bills.  Now, I hate to say this,  look at our black leaders who introduce a bill, look at what happens to it.  It sits on the table until a lot of noise is being made in the Media world.  Two years to address a bill that has the most response from the public eyes.  Something is not quite right in lansing.  Maybe the people need to look at a new governor.  What you think?

yes, it would, but not michigan's problems.

i have a job here, and the governor makes that job just that much harder. the legislature also makes that job harder by passing obstructionist bills against business interests. as much as you may hate businesses, they DO pay the majority of taxes.

you seem to think that CONTROLLING business is the answer to everything. but it answers nothing, except less tax revenue for the state. every business that leaves, folds it's tent, or just gives up is THAT MUCH LESS REVENUE THE STATE MAKES IN A YEAR.

budgets must be cut by that amount, spending must be curtailed by that amount. but so far, nothing of the sort has been accomplished. you like to say that I'M in LA-LA-LAND, but YOU seem to be in the land of DO-WHAT-EVER-YOU-PLEASE and TAKE-WHAT-EVER-YOU-WANT.

you also like to say that i am an anarchist. i gladly accept that title, as it means that i DO NOT NEED A KING. i do not need anyone else to force or coerce me to do the right thing. you seem to equate anarchist with terrorist. you couldn't be more wrong. as you couldn't be more wrong here.

We need a "jail Awareness" or "Scared Straight" program in our highschools presented by

cops, retired or volunteers or prosecutors.  It needs to be segregated by males only who turn

16 or 17.  These kids need to see just how easy it is to go to prison.  All a girl  or her parents have to say

is he "touched me" or "he touched my daughter" and off to the slammer for 3 to 5 you go.  It does not have to even be true!

All it takes is a signed statement- and off you go and on the registry you remain!  And the kids need to see that no one gives a turkey

and it will be their rectums that pay as the older inmates exploit them.

The prosecutor doesn't care, he's going home to a nice warm dinner- and kids need to hear that!  Someone should take this

idea and run with it to make it functioning program that can be presented- I don't have the gift.
