new orleans is waiting for a "handout", just those who lived from "handout" to "handout".
most of the businesses and privately owned homes are repaired, it's the "gubmint subsidized" ones that aren't.
perhaps there is a lesson there.

Changes coming to MichiganVotes - input, pleas
Dear Friends:
In a few weeks MichiganVotes will receive a new look and several new features. Check out the MichiganVotes 2.0 "beta" site at http://beta.michiganvotes.org/. Note: There are known glitches, and any comments posted there will disappear when the actual site goes live in the next couple weeks.
The centerpiece of the new site will be to move conversations like this one right onto the home page via a full-feature discussion forum software package.
I want to get your input on one likely change:
Don’t you get weary of mostly talking to “anonymous user?” Most websites require registration and a username to post comments. We haven’t in part because the current site doesn’t “remember” you, and requires users to log-on every time they open it. The new site will “remember” you.
As is common with most interactive websites registration requires giving an email, but the Privacy Policy posted under the “About this site” link (left side of page) says this:
“MichiganVotes does not release (nor has it ever released) to third parties any personal identifying information of past or current website visitors, including registered users, without express permission, except as required by law.”
What do you think? Please e-mail me directly with your views.
Regards,
Jack McHugh

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
This is good news for everybody. With this current economic crisis, it’s really hard to seek for a job since several companies today are facing bankcruptcy that tends to lay off employees. According to the Wall Street Journal, economists the “paradox of thrift” can also apply to deflation. Deflation results in lower prices and increases the value of money. The pessimistic part of this is you are going to really need those lower prices if you end up facing unemployment because your employer cut production just to meet competitive prices. Not really a pretty picture, right? However, there is good news, just like how payday loans are good news for people seeking to avoid late fees or overdraft charges. There is a very small chance that this recession will lead to deflation. Most economists agree that we will probably not see deflation anytime soon, and Feds are saying that things will get worse before they get better. So does that mean there is hope? But for the meantime, payday loans are available for your short-term financial emergencies.

INFLATION raises prices, and thus DEVALUES your money. when the price of an item GOES UP, your dollar buys less and is thus worth less.
DEFLATION lowers prices, and thus ADDS VALUE to your money. when the price of an item GOES DOWN, your dollar buys more and is thus worth more.

In the present economic and jobs conditions, this is an important lifeline to those people who find themselves unemployed. Many economist are predicting this downturn will last well into 2010. Workers need to be able to survive until the economy improves, or they will add to the length and depth of the recession.

i ask you, j, which way is better at solving the problem of unemployment.
- increase taxes to pay unemployment benefits? or
- cut taxes and fees and regulations to increase jobs so there will be fewer unemployed?
just a thought...

Sorry cajun, that doesn't work. You can cut taxes and fees and deregulate all you want, (matter of fact, that is exactly what Bush has done for eight years) and if there is no one to buy protects that you sell, it doesn't matter.
Have you ever heard of Keynesian economics. Give it a read, it's quite interesting.
I don't want to see taxes increase either, but in this situation, sticking to a failed ideology would be foolish.

Sorry cajun, that doesn't work.
<how do we KNOW it doesn't work? have we tried it here??? NO. it worked to keep the REST of the nation out of the crapper for this long while michigan whiled away the granholm years in a ONE STATE DEPRESSION, it MIGHT just work for us.>
You can cut taxes and fees and deregulate all you want, (matter of fact, that is exactly what Bush has done for eight years)
<NO, bush cut INCOME taxes, which stimulated spending, keeping the REST OF THE NATION afloat for as long as it has. i'd say that was a success. why not give the same chance to stimulate spending to the business community by cutting burdensome state business taxes?>
and if there is no one to buy protects that you sell, it doesn't matter.
<i take it you mean products, but your point is well taken. the truth is, there are people to buy our products, just not at the labor rates we charge. if we cut labor rates to the 'national average' instead of keeping them artificially inflated through union intervention, automobiles wouldn't cost what a small house does, and more people could afford them.>
<
Have you ever heard of Keynesian economics. Give it a read, it's quite interesting.
<don't know much about it, but i DO know that every dime spent on taxes is a dime that is taken away from business stimulus.>
I don't want to see taxes increase either, but in this situation, sticking to a failed ideology would be foolish.
<so, sticking to the FAILED IDEOLOGY of raising taxes to support another endless social program ISN'T foolish?>
how about we see if our government can cut it's spending by ten percent this year? i think we can both agree that could happen and no one would notice a difference. now, if they COULD cut spending by that ten percent, and cut our business taxes by an equal amount, it would be BILLIONS of dollars in money in the hands of businesses that would COST THE STATE NOTHING AND SAVE THE TAXPAYERS MONEY.
eighty percent of businesses in this state are SMALL businesses, let's start thinking about whats best for THEM, not just the BIG THREE.

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
You stretch the imagination by rationalizing away the last eight years, and blaming Granholm for Michigan's plight. Do you really think Michigan was the only state suffering these last eight years? You must live in a bubble. Check out some of the other states ecomomic conditions. Maybe take a look at California, Ohio, Indiana.
Do you really think cutting taxes was a success? How do you ignore the results we see today? If it was such a success, why are we in a near depression? Why are we even giving the time of day to Republicans? After Hoover, it took them 40 years to regain a majority. Americans don't seem to remember what really works, and what doesn't.
Businesses don't need tax breaks, they need customers. They need a strong middle class to buy their products. A strong middle class comes with unions. It was proven to be the case in the fifties and sixties. Maybe your not old enough to remember building the roads and factories that fueled our thriving economy with strong union labor. I am, I was there.
Where do you get the idea that a dime spent on taxes is a dime taken away from business. Hogwash. A dime spent on taxes is a dime spent to build roads, maintain our defenses, provide a safety net for our poor, and educate our children.
Conservativism is nothing more than moralizing selfishness.

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
you stretch credulity blaming bush for michigan's ills. bush didn't do anything to hurt michigan, granholm did.
all the states you mention are doing MUCH BETTER than we are based on several criteria. our unemployment rate has been terrifically high for the last eight years, it's the highest in the nation now. our jobs are leaving the state at an incredible rate. yes, they have problems, but their's are nothing compared to ours. we are doing NOTHING right, and by we, i mean granholm and the legislature.
yes, i think that cutting taxes was a success, and if the federal government could cut state business taxes, i think THAT would be successful too.
do you believe that ONLY UNIONS can make a strong middle class? what about states that don't have unions, shouldn't they have a weaker middle class than us? we HAVE unions and OUR middle class is faltering badly and has for eight years. i believe that our middle class would be MUCH BETTER OFF if we DIDN'T HAVE UNIONS. imagine the amount of money we'd have had to spend if we hadn't paid all those union dues.
by the way... kennedy, a DEMOCRAT, cut taxes.
a dime spent on taxes today is a dime that will go to a welfare queen, an unnecessary social program for detroit, or the failing schools in the detroit area. what good is that. we already have the problem of our state spending 'infrastructure' money on other things, why dump MORE money into the bottomless pit?
if they spent the money as they promised, and actually kept up the roads and bridges, people wouldn't complain about high taxes. but they don't. that's the problem.
how old are you?
if you were 'there' in the fifties and sixties, that would make you QUITE OLD. i was 'there' in the sixties, and was quite young. what i know about the fifties i was TOLD by people who lived through it. that's part of why i vote republican and think libertarian.

Granholm didn't do anything to hurt Michigan, Engler did. Bush did alot to hurt the nation, therefore hurting Michigan in the process.
How are all the states I mention doing better than Michigan? On what criteria? Your lazy, cajun. You want to spout your talking points and rant, but you don't do the research. Your stuck in your ideological dream world.
Yes I do believe only unions can make a strong middle class. States without strong unions do have lower wages and a weaker middle class. Check out the south, you should know a little about that. No fair counting the foreign auto makers. They pay good wages because of the unions up north.
Welfare queens? Your not only lazy, your a racist.
By the way, Bush 1 raised taxes, he was a republican.
Michigan is more than Detroit, take a road trip and see the state. Contribute to our tourist industry.
I don't consider myself as "quite old". More quite mature, or quite experienced would be appropriate.

How are all the states I mention doing better than Michigan?
- lower unemployment.
- lower crime rate.
- higher educational performance for... (here it comes...)
- less taxes paid.
On what criteria?
<see the list above.>
Your lazy, cajun.
<did you mean to say "YOU'RE" LAZY?>
You want to spout your talking points and rant, but you don't do the research. Your stuck in your ideological dream world.
<okay, by what criteria are we doing better than ;the states you mentioned?>
Yes I do believe only unions can make a strong middle class. States without strong unions do have lower wages and a weaker middle class.
<your THREE HIGHEST PAYING EMPLOYERS HAD TO BE BAILED OUT BY THE TAXPAYERS FROM THE OTHER 49 STATES.>
Check out the south, you should know a little about that.
<I DO know about the south. the state where i come from is a RIGHT TO WORK state. we have 6.7% unemployment compared to michigan's 10.2%. and that's within three years after a major natural disaster. i'd say the south was BOOMING compared to michigan. the new orleans newspaper WANT AD section is thicker than the detroit paper. if you know how to repair and restore houses, you can work down there. you get to KEEP all you get after taxes, no union dues to pay.>
No fair counting the foreign auto makers.
<why not? they opened up shop in the south, in RIGHT TO WORK states, no less. there is even a toyota truck factory in louisiana. it's hiring right now, as toyota is the largest selling manufacturer in the world. gm isn't any more.>
They pay good wages because of the unions up north.
<bull. they pay PREVAILING wages, and let you pay your own union dues IF you decide to join. it's not mandatory, and the unions have no control over hiring and firing. and very little say at the bargaining table. non-union employees ALWAYS take home more pay than union employees, because there is no union taking dues out to elect democrats.>
Welfare queens? Your not only lazy, your a racist.
<you haven't proven lazy OR racist. by the way... what makes you think i'm not black? before the storm, 89% of the city of new orleans was black. it's about 50/50 now. by the way.. of all those black brothers, HALF of them were at one time unemployed. NOW the state will not pay welfare if you are not signed up applying for work. >
By the way, Bush 1 raised taxes, he was a republican.
<no, bush 1 signed a bill that raised taxes. put through by a majority democrat house and senate. it didn't stay in the majority for long.>
Michigan is more than Detroit, take a road trip and see the state. Contribute to our tourist industry.
<nahhh.. i've seen it. once you've seen one cornfield, wheat field, bean field, and cow pasture.... i think you know the rest. i travel around for my job, i've been all over this state, and it has some beautiful scenery, IF you like looking out on farmland. i don't mind, i was raised on a sugar plantation.>
I don't consider myself as "quite old". More quite mature, or quite experienced would be appropriate.
<do you consider 68 to be quite old? that's how old you'd have to be to have BEEN THERE in the fifties and remembered it first hand.>
Sorry about that bad advice you got when your were young. I'm trying to make up for it now.
<trust me.. i've gotten lots of bad advice from democrats, but the democrats i've listened to wouldn't raise taxes if you put a gun to their head. most are more conservative than many republicans today. not all of them were in the mold of HUEY P. LONG. and there is a REASON he got shot.>

Yes, I did. Not quite as good on this keyboard as you are, but you get the point.
<your THREE HIGHEST PAYING EMPLOYERS HAD TO BE BAILED OUT BY THE TAXPAYERS FROM THE OTHER 49 STATES.>
So did New Orleans, and Wall Street. Not many union workers there, but lots of republicans with their hands out.

Prevailing wages are what they are because of unions.
<I DO know about the south. the state where i come from is a RIGHT

Could it be your state unemployment rate is lower than Michigan's because of the reconstruction of New Orleans, and all the federal dollars going there?
<you haven't proven lazy OR racist.
No, can't prove that, just my opinion, based on your comments.
<no, bush 1 signed a bill that raised taxes.
Read my lips, no new taxes.

No, I don't consider 68 to be quite old. Quite young, actually.

Numbers cajun, numbers. That's where the lazy part comes in.
[michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. there is no way any other state has a higher unemployment rate than ours. don't you WATCH THE NEWS??? OUR RATE HERE IS 10.6% AND RISING. TWO of our cities, detroit and flint, have more murders than THREE OTHER STATES COMBINED. detroit, dc, and flint are first, second and third in the nation for murders. michigan is 48th in educational performance in the nation, behind arkansas and mississippi. and mississippi is still suffering from the storm. let's see. that leaves LESS TAXES PAID... hmmm... those other states don't have a billion dollar tax bill sent out to it's businesses every year. WE DO. ]
Your lazy, cajun.
<did you mean to say "YOU'RE" LAZY?>
Yes, I did. Not quite as good on this keyboard as you are, but you get the point.
[that's quite alright, no harm, just making sure that's what you meant.]
[new orleans' federal money ran out exactly one year after the storm. all the F.E.M.A. trailers are out but a very few.and INSURANCE has paid the bulk of the repairs so far. of the one point six billion dollars spent in louisiana, most of it went to rebuilding the interstate system after it blew over in the storm. we didn't BUY ANY BANKS with our money. now, i wonder if the big three will follow the example of new orleans, or the example of wall street?]
<bull. they pay PREVAILING wages,
Prevailing wages are what they are because of unions.
[bull. the prevailing wages in a NON UNION STATE CANNOT BE BECAUSE OF THE UNIONS. it's because companies pay their workers FAIRLY, not an inflated wage based on artificial interference. can you tell me that a guy who sits on a production line and puts four bolts into a chassis to bolt seats down is WORTH 78.50 an hour? only in a union shop.>
<I DO know about the south. the state where i come from is a RIGHT TO WORK state. we have 6.7% unemployment compared to michigan's 10.2%.
Could it be your state unemployment rate is lower than Michigan's because of the reconstruction of New Orleans, and all the federal dollars going there?
[WHAT federal dollars??? there ARE NO FEDERAL DOLLARS GOING TO NEW ORLEANS SINCE ONE YEAR AFTER THE STORM. THE MONEY HAS STOPPED. fema has paid for exactly NO repairs, only for living accomodations. if you call a fema trailer living accomodations. the STATE got a whopping big check for repairing the roads, interstate ten, and the levees, but the PEOPLE of new orleans and surrounding areas got fema trailers, and red cross doughnuts. and you are talking to someone who WAS THERE.]
<you haven't proven lazy OR racist.
No, can't prove that, just my opinion, based on your comments.
[FAIR ENOUGH, but don't ASSUME. it's not becoming to an otherwise intelligent conversation. i must admit i have done some assumeing myself... i took you for an educated person. obviously i assumed incorrectly. i took it that you knew the facts, ditto.]
<no, bush 1 signed a bill that raised taxes.
Read my lips, no new taxes.
[also fair enough, but he paid for that comment, and so did every other republican. now, how about 'I DID NOT HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMAN'? does bill get to skate on his statements, but bush gets pummelled for that?]
<do you consider 68 to be quite old? that's how old you'd have to be to have BEEN THERE in the fifties and remembered it first hand.>
No, I don't consider 68 to be quite old. Quite young, actually.
[and you're STILL working a union job??? ]
And I'm still sorry about the bad advice you got, whether from democrats or republicans. It sure has given you a very negative attitude about things.
[the advice i got hasn't given me the bad attitude. my experience with unions has. my father was forced to join a union back in the bad old days before right to work. they charged him a large percentage of his paycheck a month for dues. when he died, my mother was told that the union burial insurance wouldn't pay for the funeral, the union medical insurance wouldn't pay for the medical bills my father ran up for four hours in the emergency room the day he died, and that the union life insurance had lapsed due to a contract dispute. the railroad insurances all paid promptly and in full, and continued paying till my mother died seventeen years later. yes, my father had to pay for TWO SETS OF INSURANCE. one that he trusted, and that paid as promised, and one that just took his money and ran off to elect democrats. ]
when i was a police officer, i was asked if i wanted to join the union. i told them flatly NO. this was at the time of WACO and RUBY RIDGE. the union reps were also asking if i would VOLUNTEER to kick down the doors of my relatives and fellow officers to confiscate their guns if the democratic gun ban was passed through congress.
the employees of my company can unionize if they want, so far... none have wanted to.
by the way... the biggest, most successful company in michigan, in fact in the entire united states is NON-UNION and proudly so.
they earn SO MUCH MONEY that they pay BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TAXES DAILY.
quite a few of my employees also work at walmart in their off hours. it helps pay the motorcycle notes. lots of them own big bikes.

Due
to the recession, many companies in the country are being unprofitable that
come to appoint that they needed to layoff employees. For some, this is the
only alternative to their business. Nonetheless, New York City is giving a
bailout in the form of worker retraining--for unemployed big wigs from Wall
Street. These are the very same people
who got us into the mess, already requiring massive <a

payday loans</a> to their now struggling companies. Yes, even though these people have some
serious credentials, in the form of a very good Bachelor's degree, they are
getting free retraining.

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
Maryland's three
month seasonally adjusted total unemployment rate was 6.1 percent for
the months of December 2008, January 2009 and February 2009, according
to Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
All
new recipients of emergency unemployment benefits are eligible for 33
weeks of benefits. The 33 weeks of emergency benefits are in addition
to the usual 26 weeks of regular unemployment insurance compensation.

Re: Unemployment Extensions
Hey
I have a question about the additional 13 weeks added and the other 33 emergency weeks: do you know what percent of your regular pay are you getting paid during the 13 and 33 week period?
Thank you

You will get the same amount you received(+25) while on your state unemployment benefits.

Re: Unemployment Extensions
Please share your unemployed story here and also lobby for another round of federal extended benefits - see links. Please read this article regarding Macomb County imploring Congress to pass another extension.

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
I worked in tool an die shops in the late 1980's. Have never seen it this bad! There are no jobs at all.
Buy my car insurance, license tags, and other bills just keep right on coming in!!! I am going to have to barter for food
pretty quick. Not enough pop/beer cans on the road to pay bills. Are we going to have to go to a cashless
society? This is just horrible!! I can work-Have college degrees-trade tools but absolutley no jobs are available.
My neighbor has been screwing up- all 15 of his credit cards are maxed! 75K in credit card debt!!!
5 years with no cash flow coming and no job!

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
Times are bad, but no one owes any one a living. We may have to live two or three generations in the same household and work multiple jobs to survive. In this world you need skills sets that are in demand and if you don't have those you need to develop them. How many nurses are out of work today. There's only three areas where jobs ar plentiful health care, government and education.
Hopefully, if we stop increasing the size and scope of government they'll be more. I'm working 4 jobs now, 3 of which are selling which is hit or miss and I'm not receiving governemnt assistance. I now of a number of people who are collecting unemployment and have turned down low paying jobs. I know this is not the heart of the argument but, if you continue to extend unemployment, market forces will cause to wages for low paying jobs to increase hurt the economy,

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
People need time to adjust to changes in employment opportunities. The economy needs time to recover. Some experts are calling this a "jobless" recovery. Since the unemployed now are victims, not causes, of this economic slump, we should do all we can to cushion their financial fall, and give them the time and ability to transition to the new demands on labor.
I support this bill wholeheartedly.

Re: 2007 Senate Bill 86 (Extend unemployment insurance benefits )
Since unemployment has already been extablished, i support this bill. The only sickening thing that disappoints me is why any of it even had to be established!
YOBAMA NEEDS TO PUT US ALL TO WORK!!
WE NEED TAX SHELTERS FOR ALL WEALTHY PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DO BUSINESS IN MICHIGAN!! WE NEED BUSINESS OWNERS AND BUSINESS EDUCATED LEADERS AND POLITICIANS TO BRING BUSINESS BACk TO MICHIGAN, NOT MORE AND MORE WELFARE AND UNENJOYMENT BENEFITS!! I WANT MY RIGHT AND CAPABILITY TO PROSPER, BY HAVING A STATE THAT HAS ITS CITIZENS/BUSINESSES PROSPER, SO I CAN POSITION MYSELF FINANCIALLY TO GET MORE EDUCATION AND PROCREATE MY OWN BUSINESS IDEAS IN WHICH GOD ORDAINED IN ALL OF US TO HAVE A ENTRPRENEURIAL SPIRIT!!!!
