    Confused?????

Im not the one you replied to but let me tell you, my husband has to go to work at 3-4 am everyday to suport our family. Get a ride??!! I have heard this so many times I want to scream!! You come pick him up for me and take him to what ever job site he has to be on in west michigan that early. We live paycheck to paycheck so I'll cover your gas and pay you ten dollars a day for the ride. Sound fair??? Yes it is my husbands fault that his licence was suspended. But he paid his debt to society. The state suspended his license for a while but he should have been able to get it back. Do you have an extra 1000.00?? You can give it to me since you seem to agree with this law. We should pay our debts for illegal activity but the government can get away illegal activity?? This is excessive!!! So, dont judge people as lying and not telling the truth until you know the true facts!!!!!

You know so much dont you!

Hey jerk!! my husband owes thousands and dosnt have a DUI!!! So I guess its not a matter of being stupid or drunk is it!! This whole thing is about excessive fines. Not one person I have read of so far has complained for paying their dues. Its the extra fines that we are being charged ILLEGALLY for. Call me, you can give me your credit card number if you have so much money to throw around!!

    Driver Responsibiliy Fees

I am a police officer in Michigan. I am totally against the Driver Responsiblity Fee Law here. I know of several police officers who find it hard to act in some circumstances because of the fees are hitting the common worker hard. This law should be appealed.

Many of the laws being passed are not for the benefit of the people. This law should like many laws being passed by both state and federal law makers should be put to the vote of the people. These so called law makers are getting out of control.

    Froze Husbands bank account

In Nov. of 2005 I got a DUI. I admit that I had a few beers at the restaurant and I know I probably shouldn't have been driving. It was raining and when I turned the corner exiting the highway, my car slipped a little and I nearly hit a curb. It was cold out and I think the ice on the roads had a bit to do with it. $2000 for the lawyer. $2000 in fines in court. $1500 for the increase in insurance (I'm 32 and this was my very first ticket). Year 1, $1000 for a driver responsibility fee. Year 2, $1000 for a driver responsibility fee. I missed my July payment this year. We just don't have the money. Then in August, I receive a letter stating that I have until August 29th to resolve the payment missed or they will suspend my license. I had just deposited the check to pay the fine online via EFT yesterday. Then last night we log in to HIS bank account to pay a few bills. "I AM NOT ON THE ACCOUNT" only to find that they have frozen the account and placed a levy against the $370 in it. This morning we find three bounced checks and $75 in fines for those. Looks like we are headed straight down into a pit of financial trouble over this and we have no idea what to do. Can they freeze his account for my driver responsibility fee? Why didn't they send some type of notice that they were going to do this? If you know of any information that might help, please let us know.

Do you think for one minute they will listen to the people? St. Clair County recently voted against the 800 mhz radio system that would have increased the taxes. Remember the citizens voted it down. Well you guessed it they are going in crease your tax and do it any way. The same thing happened in Macomb County a few years ago. People its time to have another tea party.

    re: confused

You don't seem to understand. Yes it is against the law to drive without insurance and to drive on a suspended lic. But, the fees these people are talking about are fees paid ON TOP of fines and tickets already paid. They have already PAID for their offenses per the law. These drivers assessment fees are fees ON TOP of all that has already been paid. Do you understand that?? It is paying for the same offenses TWICE. paying for the same offenses TWICE. I dont' think you are getting that. Maybe you can understand it this way - say you bought a car and paid your taxes. Then the State says they have a new fee for people who buy new cars. It's called, the New Car Assessment Fee and you have to pay AGAIN a fee of $200 - 5000. Does that seem fair, constitutional or democratic? No, it is B.S. AND once again, they have passed a law that the voters and residents of this state did NOT get to vote on. Why? Because they KNEW it would be voted down. Is THAT democratic ???? No, but it happens all the time. Our government both locally and nationally has gotten so big and fat it's sick. They pass laws giving themselves more power and more say so while we give up more and more of our rights and we have no say in all of this. THAT is NOT democracy. All I can offer is that each and every one of us has to write to our governor, our state reps and our congressmen to demand this law be appealed. It is their JOB to listen to us and it is their JOB to do what is in the best interest of the PEOPLE - NOT to make more money for the government at the people's expense. If they do not listen, they are not doing their jobs and we need to start petitions to have them removed from office. If they cannot do their jobs, they should be fired.

    Granholm.....

I purposly didn't pay a parking ticket out of spite, one thing escalted to another now my license is suspended, really I could care less! Hey Granholm you at life, I will not pay your stupid reinstatement fee that you decided to put in place to force all the people who are fortunate to still have jobs in this state pay for your lunch, and assist you in re-cooping costs associated to your campaign. I didn't vote for you and from what I gather to masses didn't vote for you, your approval rating was about as high as George W's and Kwame's obviously vote tampering needs be looked at a little closer!!

The "Drivers Responsablity Fee" is a 100% unconsttitutional. It is a tax that was never voted on by voters! if driving is a priviledge take that if i don't pay, but do not seize assets for a priviledge I forfitted. I was a landscape business owner. Due to tough times, I let my insurance laps and got a ticket for loud exaust($180) and a no proff of insurance ticket ($800). Since I have I have lost my truck, my business, laid off 3 workers, and am about to file for a bridge card. Thank you leaders your more then Burned former business owner

    Take Responsibility

I have some advice for you - accept responsiblity for your actions. You could have killed someone, you could have killed my children. You need to accept responsibility for your actions, pay your fines. You knew you had to make this payment and chose not to - once again, you appear to have not learned from your mistake. Plan ahead financially - you know you have to pay your mortgage each month and you plan for it. You can't tell the bank, 'sorry, money is tight' - you are still responsible for what you owe. By the sounds of your letter, you have no remorse for what you did, you are still blaming it on the weather. You were driving drunk - don't feel sorry for yourself that you are now facing the music for your actions, take responsibility for what you did, don't ever make the same mistake again and realize you are lucky you or someone else weren't more seriously injured. Take a cab the next time and stay off our roads!

    i'd say he HAS

taken responsibility. how many times does he have to be responsible? one? the time he paid his fines and did his time? or two? the time he had to pay the EXTRA fine? if every crime, big and small were like this, you wouldn't like it when the cops gave you a speeding ticket either. it's not the original (legal) fine and time he's complaining about, it's the EXTRA fine that hurts everyone. it's unfair, it's unconstitutional, and it's wrong.

    And Today

the state gestapo is out in force on I-94 Operation Asphalt or some stupid thing. Now we give our tax/fee programs cute little names. Maybe they just want to maximize revenue by getting folks as they are heading west to get out of this police state. Bright sunny day, no rain, light traffic and they are out hiding and writing speed revenue tickets to keep you safe? This kind of safety I can live without. We need the state cops like worms need pencils.

    Lady Marie

My daughter was stopped and charged for driving with a suspended license that she didn't know about. She never received any notice/letters. She however should have known if she had tickets and didn't pay them. Being 20 yrs old, lessons to be learned. The point being, notices are not sent to forewarn you when your license is about to be suspended when you have tickets such as parking or speeding, and this is not good. I agree that the state is forcing good citizens out with all of these costly fees. To make matters worst, collecting the fees are contracted out to a company who doesn't know what the left hand is doing for the right, causing frustration for those caught in the middle. I feel everyone's pain, the state is grabbing at more than straws here to pay the bills. This responsibility fee is outrageously overpriced. Students have enough to pay in overpriced tuition and books, let alone to be bothered with the state on their backs about a responsibility fee two years in a row. My daughter moved to Chicago where she recently graduated from college and can't get an Illinois driver's license until she pays the fees owed to Michigan. It's taken her the last 3 months just to get a payment plan set up with the third party contractor. They were sending her mail to wrong address all the time and threatened to levy her small wages until I suggested she talk to a manager with both the state and the contracted 3rd party to get their business straight. What a mess, and all to bring a few extra bucks to the state. You can rest assure the contracted third party is getting a large share of the fee. Yes, this responsibility fee is a painful headache to all involved. The state of Michigan is in a real bad situation. Many citizens are leaving and I will be one of them as soon as my teens graduate from high school. It's getting to expensive to stay here. "Last one to leave, turn out the lights."

    Motorhomes and travel trailers

Here is on for you guys. Buy a 30 thousand dollar travel trailer and the plates are permanent for as long as you own the trailer after a one time fee. Buy a 30,000 dollar motorhome used for the same activity driven down the same roads that the trailer is pulled down and you pay through the nose every year.

Everyone of us has the potential to do harm everyday. I'll bet you drive around with a cell phone glued to your ear all day. It is a proven fact that a driver on a cell phone is as bad or worse than a .01 drinker. Do you support ruining your life for talking on a cell phone? The only difference is the media campaign to demonize alcohol.

  • 10-03-2007 11:50 AM In reply to

    michigan has

NEVER had the death penalty as a state, and that is because of two incidents, first was a 'mistaken identity' case where canadians 'supposedly' executed the wrong person, read that as another person 'confessed' years later, and a 'rightful' execution where, (heaven forbid) an accused man actually sang a hymn and broke up the 'party atmosphere'. sounds like awful flimsy excuses not to have justice to me.

    Unjustified

The people this driver responsiblity fee hurts most is those that can't afford it. So, the SOS will suspend their license for not paying, they will drive anyway, get into another accident or have another drunk driving incident, rack up more points, more driver responsiblity fees, and just keep driving. All this does is force those people to drive anyway instead of be law abiding. Drop the fee and find another way to help those folks be responsible.

    It takes guts

I am sure in Nazi Germany when the gestapos told the citizens not to drive their cars in 1939 some people said,'try and stop me'. These folks drove to Austria and Poland to be free again. That is what the Granholm administration is trying to attempt here. The state will not issue license plates or personal drivers license because the state is broke and the loonies in Lansing think they can extort cash from the working man. These fees are not fines. They are blackmail pure and simple. Pay to help the state's bankrupcy or be a criminal. I spoke with a twenty year old waiter with no proof of insurance and the DR fee alone was $1000. This man can only earn that in a month and he has 3 kids to feed. Do the math. Is he going to let his kids starve or drive without legal status. It takes guts to live in Michigan.

    infractions and felons

In the next 5 years In the next 5 years michigan will become a penal colony. Michigan now has more jails/prisons than any state in the counrty. If laws like the Drivers Responsibility Act aren't repealed there will be no honest hard working citizens left in the state. All of our carpenters, tool makers, auto designers and dentists will leave. Everyone needs to do somthing about this, or nothing will ever change. The Lansing government will hold all the power because we "decided" to do nothing. Do you want to live in constant fear of your next fine from state government for breaking a simple trafic law (misdemeaner) and pay felons punishment? Or do you think this should be a free and fair country the way our founding fathers intened it? Really "WE THE PEOPLE" only pertains if the people get involed and watch what our government is doing. This is about revenue. Breaking trafic law that could cost you the right to drive , which in turn will cost you your job and home. Not having a proof of insurance is a clerical mistake in most cases. A burned out brake light is a maintenance issue. DRA means $1100 extra. Let your legislater know what you think, BE INFORMED. House bill 4006 repeals this unfair "tax-law". SAVE OUR GREAT STATE before its too late and we are all felons.

    Double jeopardy

Plain and simple this law violates the U.S. Constitution, the 5th Amendment right against double jeopardy. Not only does the right protect you from being twice tried for the same crime it protects us from being PENALIZED for the same crime twice. So technically it's triple jeopardy! Not to mention the devastating effects it has on Michigan citizens!

    Drivers Responsibility Fees

hey for your information some of have taken responsibility and are doing what we can to pay our fees and still keep our jobs and houses, I hope to god you don't ever screw up one time in your life because I'm sure by your comments IT DEFINITELY WOULDN"T BE YOU FAULT!! drinking and driving is stupid and believe it or not once and awhile a person makes a mistake that they regret and believe they are already paying for it without the added responsibility fees so unless you are in the shoes of that person, don't judge so harshly.
