These fees are not about punishing lazy butts. this is about finding ways to raise money for the state. If everyone paid there license fees on time, Granholm would not have sought this "tax." It's all about sticking it to whomever is least politically potent. Thus, you have all these bad behavior fees. There were plenty of people with bad behavior, say, a generation ago, but the state of Michigan had a sufficient tax base not to devise such fees to impose on the bad behaviors. Blaming the behavior is missing the point: government should not be in the business of seeking out and imposing stealth taxes. Find a budget and stick to it. Then, legislators would have to justify a 3.9% or 4.0% tax rate at its face value. Instead of hitting citizens with fees left and right to avoid facing the budget problem... we, as a state, are still spending like a wealthy state, which we are no longer... wake up and smell the coffee, Granholm.

and those who defend such bad behavior fees
prove that Granholm found a tax devise which ruffles the least feathers amongst citizenry. Hey, the tax doesn't affect me, but, personally, I would rather have a government which is more straight forward, even if it costs me an extra tenth of a percent or so on my state income taxes. But go ahead, beat your fellow citizen over the head with these fees. Your state government laughs as you are doing it.

Great Quote Queen jen Needs To Read
"The collection of any taxes which are not absolutely required, which do not beyond reasonable doubt contribute to the public welfare, is only a species of legalized larceny. . . . The wise and correct course to follow in taxation is not to destroy those who have already secured success, but to create conditions under which everyone will have a better chance to be successful." (Calvin Coolidge inaugural address, March 4, 1925)

$70k a year man reduced to $20k
Yes, I too have suffered the consequence of a mistake that took my license and job away. Yes, I deserved to be punished but to have lost a job that required me to drive, pay court fees & fines that go to local and state government, then pay driver responsibility fees too. The reason this is getting attention now is because its hurting everyone, even the legislators that created this monster. Its too bad the people that write these laws don't go through more of what the people in this state have to go through and understand why Michigan is hurting and not healing. 40% of repeat offenders become repeat offenders out of frustration of the system and depression from bleak circumstance. While I won't let myself become a statistic, this has been the toughest obstacle for me to overcome and I'm almost ready to leave Michigan for a better 2nd chance elsewhere as many other have already done.

You do the crime you pay the fine
Oh please, it only cost $7.00 more to renew your lic. after it exp. $10.00 for a plate if you renew late. and as for the Driver resp. fees you only get those if you you mess up really really bad like drive without ins. get 6 or more points on your lic. drive on a susp lic.or drive drunk. And if you are talking about paying LOTS and LOTS of money to the state (thousands of dollars) then you are a drunk driver.
If you are stupid enough to do any of that then you should have to pay lots of money for your lic. maybe next time you will think twice before you break the law.
