2006 Senate Bill 1224 (Prohibit riding bicycles abreast on streets )

Introduced in the Senate on April 20, 2006, to prohibit a person riding a bicycle or moped on a public road from riding abreast of another rider, unless it is specifically allowed on the particular road by a state or local law. Also, to require bicycle riders to stay all the way over on the right when riding on a road, except for situations defined in the bill, require riders using the sidewalk (where allowed) to yield to pedestrians, and require them to make an audible signal when overtaking pedestrians. The bill also revises provisions related to cars yielding to bikes, and other related matters. See the House Fiscal Agency analysis for details

The vote was 37 in favor, 0 opposed and 1 not voting

Another stupid law. I hope that there is $$ in the budget for prisons for the 10, 11 and 12 year-olds that we are about to turn into criminals.

    Rolling In The Right Direction

A bill requiring bicyclists to behave more responsibly and civilly when they ride is a good idea. SB 1224 seems to do that in most respects. One item of concern is that the bill as passed by the Senate has removed a long standing prohibition against bicyclists riding between lines of motor vehicle traffic. That prohibition should be restored in the interest of safety. Motorists have enough things to keep them occupied without having to worry about some Yahoo on a bicycle zipping up between a line of cars in slow moving or stopped traffic. Another is that bicyclists should be required to stop before entering a roadway or street crosswalk. While ensuring their privilege to ride and be treated respectfully, bicyclists also should be held responsible for ensuring their own safety to the greatest extent possible.

Giving Bicyclists Legal Use of the Roads

Senate bill 1224 is a useful reform of the treatment of bicycles in the Michigan Vehicle Code. As most motorists (should) know, bicycles have all the rights and obligations of other vehicles on the road, except for a clause in the law requiring them to "ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge" of the pavement. The word "practicable" is effectively meaningless, so this bill adds a list of conditions that reasonably justify the use of the rest of the lane by cyclists, such as rough pavement, loose gravel, junk in the road, left turns (especially from one-way streets) and to pass or get out of the way of right-turning cars. While this bill won't change much in the way bicycles are operated on the roads, it will give driver's-ed. teachers a basis for explaining to new drivers that they may have to properly pull over and pass a bicycle, and that the bicycle need not keep to the right of the rightmost lane if it's not safe for the cyclist to do so.

    Obesity

With the rise of Childhood and Adult obesity and diabetes. New Medical Terms are Diabese and Diabesity. We as a state should start putting in bike paths next to all roads and highways. MOre people would ride bikes-but we have to feel safe-don't want a car running up our behinds

    thats it...

clutter up the already "target rich environment" with more vehicles that motorists will swear they didn't see when they plow them over.

    Give Me A Break!

When I see stuff like this coming out of the black hole we call lansing I am even more sure that these guys are bored to tears or dumber than rocks. Hopefully they are bored and that is why they come up with this drivel. If so then it is truly time for a part time legislature. To the moron that likes this new waste of paper, get a private nanny and leave the rest of us the hell alone.

    More and More laws

This is just another example of bored lawmakers needing to feel good.I would like to see a lawmaker leave office and say I did nothing all I did was make sure the current laws made sense. Thes laws like this are just another direct assault on our rights and freedoms. It also assumes people in society don't have common sense. Why don't they start doing something useful like axing some laws off the books instead of adding more.

    Unbelievable

I think the game plan is to make so many laws that just leaving your house could subject you to arrest and fines so that the monster can keep feeding itself.

i will agree with this to a point.

bicycle riders are a very arrogant lot. on roads where there is a bicycle lane they still ride as close to the line as they nearest the road way that you still have to slow down withyour car and swerve around them. they also ridind two to thre abreast on two lane roads obstructs vehicle traffic. controling a 15 lb. bike is a lot easier to control than a 2 ton car or truck. bicyclist should have to give way not the other way around. we have to by licence plate of our cars, trucks, motorcycles. why shouldn't bicyclist have buy a sticker to operate on the roads ????

    Just Outlaw The Darn Things

They're terribly slow, make people lose weight and then they want to eat more. Where will get the ethanol if all you bike riders keep eating? Maybe if we just lock up all the people we can keep them safe and won't need anymore stupid laws.

    Great Idea

lets put a bounty on laws. the more laws a rep kills the more money they make.
