Not Moving Any Time Soon Thank You Very Much
Any child that does not say GOD during the pledge should not be meant to be feel that he or she is not a partiotic citizens! What year is this? Nope, the calendar says 2006. Welcome to a new millenium, folks! That child that feels uncomfortable saying God may well be a fine problem solver, our best scientist, our best diplomat, a leader, a peacekeeper. Should that person not feel welcome in our schools and country? That person who feels uncomfortable saying GOD when they've not been given a chance to come to that belief ON THEIR OWN, should pack their bags and head for Canada? Then it would be America's loss. It is fine for one to respect your choice in religion, but there is no room in this country for those who choose to not have a religion? Cannot the child who does not say GOD have a love of country, of other people? Cannot that person serve their country is some positive manner? I guess the BIG question is CAN A PERSON WHO CHOOSES NOT TO HAVE A RELIGION HAVE A MORAL COMPASS? I say yes. I guess we've come a little way over time. Galileo? Did he even get the choice to pack his bags and leave the country? Or was house arrest the only option? This country was suppose to be founded on religious freedom. I've studied the Founding Fathers. Does that not include the choice not to have a religion? Should that child move to Oregon or Washington where few people claim to have a religion? Or Europe, where many of came our citizens came from in the first place? I here they're not all that religous anymore, ironically.
Where does a person that does not wish to say God go? What country would welcome them? I certainly hope the person who said that child should pack their bags in not a member of our educational system here in Michigan!

When you separate church (religion) from government affairs you have a secular state. Secularism is indifference to religion -- that is, religious beliefs and considerations do not bear on the state’s behavior. Atheism is rejection of belief in a divine being or deity. These are far from the same thing.

secularism is a great ideal, like all the other ideals.
it is something well worth striving for.
it is also, as a practical matter, very hard to achieve.
this country is unique in that it was founded by those who (or who's decendents had) escaped religious persecution.
what they wrote into the constitution was that the state shall not establish a national religion, not that there shall be no religion in the establishment or maintenance of the state.

Is religion getting the job done? Is it really fixing things?
Ben Franklin had to explain to folks that lightning was NOT the hand of God punishing people. He said, "God helps those who help themselves." Let's get to it. I'm not waiting around for God to help. If I see something I don't like, I'll fix it. Sometimes religion gets it wrong. It hasn't been a overally positive thing for women, that's for sure. That Dogma movie is striking.

i taught police officers how to safely and effectively use their firearms.
talk about a group who didn't want to be there...
then, i had to frisk each and every one of them at the door.

teaching a bunch of "I know better than you" police officers, some with many more experience, who would rather be golfing, fishing, or just out there working than sitting in your class has taught me that teaching is one of the few "almost thankless" jobs in the country.
i had to drill into those thick skulls the importance of preparedness, of following rules that they should know, but have conveniently forgotten, and that they have to bring the thing (their weapon) to work every day whether they want to or not.
only three times has anyone ever looked at me and said, "thanks"...
all three involved using the things i taught them to save their own bacon.
no, i didn't follow "all" the department rules and regs, (read that as i didn't just quote regs and department instructions, and that i actually made them prove that they had learned the lesson.) and i did spend a little more money on ammo for the "less than average" students, but it all worked out fine in the end.

Crazy Cajun, hate to burst your bubble but said
thank you just to clear the page because I needed to project this page up on wall in classroom and there were some controversial tops on one of the three comments, BUT THANK YOU for trying to teach adults. They're a tough crowd at times, too. And teachers are the worst listeners. We admit it freely.

Lawmakers call on Republicans to end stonewalling, fight out-of-state trash– April 3, 2006
LANSING – Oakland County Democrats today introduced anti-trash legislation that would ban new landfills until 2011. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality released a report in February showing Michigan took in 6.2 million tons of Canadian and out-of-state trash in 2005 – a 100,000-ton increase from 2004.
"This clearly is a case of, ‘if you build it, they will come,’ and Michigan cannot afford to play the Republicans’ waiting game," said State Representative Marie Donigan (D-Royal Oak). "Canadian and out-of-state trash threatens our communities, our land and water, and our quality of life. Our priority should be protecting Michigan residents and boosting our economy by creating jobs of the future, not giving the waste industry a free pass to trash our state."
The House Democratic plan prevents landfill operations from expanding until 2011. Michigan has an estimated 17 years of landfill space left for citizens in the state – but that space is being gobbled up by garbage from Canada, Ohio, Wisconsin, New Jersey and other states. In addition to having a glut of landfills, Michigan also charges waste companies 21 cents per ton, the lowest dumping charge in the region.
Since 2005, House Republicans have repeatedly refused to pass tough anti-trash measures that attack the economics of the garbage trade. Amid public pressure, Republicans finally announced a so-called trash plan that lets Michigan stop Canadian trash only if Congress gives Michigan such authority – something that has never happened. The Republicans’ refusal to act at the state level also allowed a ban on new landfills to lapse on December 31, 2005, meaning landfill operations can expand again in Michigan. At least one operation, Woodlands Meadow in WayneCounty, has asked to expand.
"Other states ship their garbage here because we’re cheap and we have ever-expanding landfill space," said State Representative Aldo Vagnozzi (D-Farmington/Farmington Hills). "Michigan doesn’t need more landfills. We need action to prevent more out-of-state trash from piling up in our landfills. This is an issue we can’t ignore."
According to the DEQ, garbage from Canada and other states made up 29 percent of all the trash in Michigan landfills in 2005, up from 28 percent in 2004. Michigan residents, meanwhile, sent 100,000 tons less trash to the state’s landfills in 2005 compared with 2004. More than 400 Canadian trash trucks rumble across Michigan’s three border bridges and into the state every day.

FLINT – Republicans’ refusal to pass tough anti-trash laws is directly responsible for the growing boom in new landfills, Genesee County House Democrats said today. After Republicans allowed a ban on new landfills to expire at the end of 2005, at least six landfill operations are poised to either expand or be newly built with more likely to follow.
"More landfills will only invite more Canadian and out-of-state trash into Genesee County, and that’s why we must clamp down on any expansions now," said Rep. Lee Gonzales (D-Flint Township).
"Trash comes to our beautiful state for one simple reason: We have too much landfill space," said Rep. Paula Zelenko (D-Burton). "Our land is valuable and we should protect it for our citizens, not use it so Canada or Ohio has a place to dump their trash."
"Michigan can act at the state level to slam the brakes on Canadian and out-of-state trash, and we should begin by banning new landfills," said Rep. John J. Gleason (D-Flushing), whose district contains the Brent Run Landfill. "Fewer landfills will attack the economics of the trash trade and turn back the trash trucks from Canada and other states."
The Genesee County Democrats urged House Republicans to pass a plan to ban new landfills until 2011.
A ban on new landfills expired Dec. 31, 2005. House Democrats have been pushing for the past year for the Republican-controlled Legislature to renew the ban and help protect Michigan communities. Republicans repeatedly refused and eventually punted, leaving the issue to the federal government.
The six new or expanding landfill operations include Carleton Farms and Woodland Meadows in Wayne County; Pine Tree Acres in Lennox Township in Macomb County; Southeast Berrien County Landfill; Whitefeather Landfill in Bay County; and a new landfill to be built in Allegan County.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality said Michigan took in 6.2 million tons of Canadian and out-of-state trash in 2005, 100,000 tons more than in 2004."

i meant that somebody IN GOVERNMENT (you know, the guys who write the rules and collect the taxes) thought it was a good idea.
where was the outrage then????
it seems that up here in michigan, a citizen isn't allowed to pass gas without a fist full of permits and a reciept for the clean air tax that he paid.
they probably sold the idea on the "they'll actually PAY us to take their garbage. that'll mean YOUR TAXES won't go up." lie.

i would like to stay up here and maybe open up a cajun food restaraunt.
i started raising money to do it.
then i read SOME of the things i had to go through to open a restaraunt that happens to serve liquor.
seventy five thousand dollars to buy somebody elses permit is a bit stiff, don't you think???
those that STAY will be very surprised at the amount of NANNYISM there is in this state.
i don't feel i need to be protected from myself.

THAT private company is a BAD IDEA. Sneaky stuff slips through.
That's why Michigan Votes is so perfect. You can keep on eye on things. Government, by the people, for the people and all that jazz. It only works if your are patriotic and get involved. That's a citizen's responsibility. So who was in charge when this business started because it never should have? Michigan has a much brighter future than THIS! We've got more going for us than being a national dumping ground.

if the problem is your kid not saying the pledge in class...
maybe you should take a few minutes and have a chat with the teacher.
maybe you will find out why he/she doesn't want to recite the pledge.
then when you hear that they "can't" cuz of some law, rule, or regulation...
put them into a school that WILL.
