Just a way to get money

Who new this law existed? What is totally nuts is that by the fee schedule, it cost more and you are apparently more dangerous if you don't have proof of insurance, than if you speed 4 times, fail to yield 4 times, run a stop sign 3 times! I don't know anyone that has ever been killed by not having proof of insurance. It has nothing to do with driving ability. This must is nuts!

    state sponsored extortion

I had a traffic violation while driving through New York. I was being careless and I have no problem paying the fine to the state of New York. I didn't know that I would be fined again by Michigan for committing a traffic violation in another state. Now I have to pay this bullshit 150 dollars or getting my licence suspended. I am getting fined twice for the same offense. Another thing I find interesting is that they made a point about paying another 125 dollars if you do not pay the fine by its due date, but I stared over the letter front and back and could not find a due date anywhere. I guess the state mofia wants to leave room to accuse you of being late no matter when you send in the payment. This law is just extortion in disguise, pay us money or something bad will happen to you.

    class action............

I am a school bus driver and work for my county as a snow plow driver. I am furios with the State concerning this bill. I recieved a ticket in East Lansing near the Breslin center for doing 30 in a 25 mph zone(speed trap, I was visiting the MSU campus for a basketball tournament and didn't notice any signs posted for a speed reduction, in fact I was last in a line of 5 cars traveling the same speed. The ticket was $135 which doubled to $270 because payment was not recievd in the alloted time, btw I had trouble coming up with the $135 but who gives a crap right? anyhow the court wrote me explaining they would take the money from my state tax refund, cool with me, they held it up but I guess the process didn't go as fast as they wanted so someone decided to go ahead and suspend my license, I never recieved a letter from the state saying it was suspended."here comes the good part" a police officer from the neighboring township waited apx. 7 houses from my residence at a convenience store, allowed me to pass then got behind me and stopped me, informed me that I "fit the description of the owner of the car whos license was suspened", got the ticket for dwls paid the $270 + $150 in court fees 2 points = speeding ticket, 2 points = dwls, then recieved a letter from the state $500 in 30 days for driver responsibility and additional $500 this time next year on top of all that insurace for my vehicles went up. All tha to say this I had 0 points prior now 2+2+(3) for driver responsibility = 7 will likely loose both jobs because 7 is the limit at both, $1420 = tickets, fees & fines, insurance dramatically increased. What can I do?

    EXTORTION/ DRIVER RESPONIBILITY FEES

I HAVE HAD TO MOVE OUT OF MICHIGAN AFTER BEING LAID OFF THREE TIMES AND HAVING TO PAY OVER $2500 DOLLARS IN DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY FEES. I AM NOT A BAD DRIVER BUT THESE FEES ALLOW FOR DRIVERS WITHOUT PROOF OF INURANCE TO BE PUNISHED WORST THEN THE REAL BAD DRIVERS.I HAVE NEVER HAD A SPEEDING TICKET OR ACCIDENT OR ANYTHING THAT WOULD CONSIDER ME A BAD DRIVER. I DIDNT HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY INSURANCE, TO RENEW MY TAGS, WHICH RESULTED IN ME GETTING PULLED OVER.I DONT EVEN HAVE ANY POINTS ON MY LICENSE. MY CAR WAS IMPOUNDED TWICE IN A MONTHS PERIOD, BY DETROIT POLICE, THE SAME COP STOPPED ME BOTH TIMES AND HE FELT SO BAD THAT HE GAVE ME AND MY SON A RIDE HOME. BOTH TIMES I WAS ON MY WAY TO SCHOOL. I HAVE HAD TO TAKE OUT A HIGH INTEREST PRIVATE STUDENT LOAN IN ORDER TO GET MY DRIVER LICENSE BACK. I HAVE BEEN PUNISHED FOR THE SAME OFFENSE AT LEAST 5 TIMES 1.) PAY IMPOUND FEES 2.)PAY ACTUAL TICKET 3.) PAY CITY REINSTATEMENT FEE 4.)PAY 1ST DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY FEE 5.) PAY 2ND YEAR DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY FEE 6.)PAY $125 REINSTATEMENT FEE TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE. DOES ANYONE THINK THAT IT IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THIS CRAP, OR DO YOU CARE. WHY IS MICHIGAN PUSHING ITS CITIZENS TO OTHER STATES, WHEN THE STATE IS ALREADY STRUGGLING.

    that's some s***

I think this is a bunch of s***. I have young kids at home. The state gave me this fee. Then took my driving privledge away to. This is a joke for the gov. to make more money. People don't care if they have the exta money to throw away. Others have better things to spend there money on. Not to say the courts took my baby cause I didn't have a licenses to take him back and forter to the doc.

FEE ...I TOO HAVE BEEN THROUGH IT I WAS LAID OFF LAST YEAR AND LOST THE INSURANCE ON MY VEHICLE I DIDNT HAVE ANY MONEY TO PAY IT(I AM A LAW ABIDING CITIZEN ITS NOT RIGHT)..AND WITH MY LUCK I WAS PULLED OVER 2 TIMES AND NOW GOING THROUGH MY SECOND ROUND WITH THIS CRAP...I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I RIGHT THERE WITH YOU ON THAT...OUR STATES GOING TO CRAP ..THE FUTURE IS A SCARY THING TO THINK ABOUT!!! _

    Thanks Michigan

I have been without a lisanse for 10 years. I keep getting driveing on suspend. I have to go to work to keep my house and food on the table. I have quit work so I dont drive and have been sober over a year. I am now faceing a devorice. My wife gets made when I dont bring money home to support my 5 year old daughter. I work construction as a mason. The jobs in Michigan are hard to come by thes days. I could pay my fines if I could drive to work. I am not lazy or even a bad driver. never had a speeding ticket or ran a stop sign. I just got into some trouble 10 years ago. Now I am a criminal thank. I love my daughter and my wife vary much. I have made some bad desisions in the past, but I have tryed hard to be a better person. I have strugeled with drugs and alcahole for 15 years. Now I am clean and sober just what the state of Michigan wants. But thay will not give me a lisense. I will lose the rest of what I have a butiful little daughter a loveing wife. I know its not all the state of Michigans falt. I put my self in this situation. But what pisses me of the most is thay want you to jump througe hops. I have jumped as high as I can. I think I might end it all by one last jump in frount of a bus infrount of the state capital. All I am is a burned out shell I have not a dame thing. I figure my daughter will get about a $1000.00 a mounth From the my socal sacerity. I bet the stat of Michigan will garnes the checks untel thay get there $4400.00. I have no fight left in me.

    Driver Responsibility Fee

Agree with most posting. Until this law is repealed, I will vote against all incumbent elected officials and vote no on any and all requests for tax increases. My current job allows me to work in Michigan and Ohio. I am strongly considering removing my family from this State. With Granholm, Kwame and the auto industry I feel like we are riding on the Titanic.

    DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY FEES?

well this law or whatever it is is pointless, for a person like me who can barly afford to feed his kids, have to make over $1500 in "fees" thanks to Gov Grandholm and the Michigan Department of State Police Post 3 and the 91st district court, they already take our money and stuff, why impose pointless fees to people that are trying to make a living? I FEEL THAT I NEED TO MOVE OUT of Michigan, Michigan is losing jobs and this country is going down quick. WE NEED TO CHANGE THIS LAW
  • 08-10-2008 1:11 PM In reply to

    seriously screwed

I agree with the other bloggers I am on a fixed income and trying to afford the basic living expenses is like not happening to pull something of that magnitude you would need to change all around from the job market to the household income I am barely living here and to get something like drivers responsibility added to a ticket something has got to give or maybe I need to get out.

    we the people

we the people have the right to say what goes and what stays. The driver responsible act is hitting our pockets very hard and making it so we cant live comfortable with out allof the stress. If i pay for my tickets and the insurance for my car and the high gas prices and the car note and maintence on my vehicle where does that leave money for anything else it is crazy to have this ectra expense on top of all of what we the people do.

    we the people ?

we the people ? You think that this ultra socialist government is going to give up any of their power over you? The "we the people" thing has been gone since we started to allow ignorant slackers to vote. These folks WANT a nanny state and the socialists are all too happy to provide it. It's easier to be dependent than to provide; easier to spend other people's money than your own; easier to destroy than create; easier to protest than support; easier to be entitled than to earn; easier to demand than supply; easier to observe than act; easier to run than to fight; easier to criticize than to do; easier to lecture than perform; easier to follow than to lead; easier to complain than adjust; easier to cheat than to merit; easier to receive than give; easier to conform than to stand out; easier to give in than to convince; easier to be in consensus than independent; easier to think with the group than for yourself; easier to be liked than ridiculed; easier to be feared than respected; easier to savage than to praise... Socialist which is more honest than the word "liberal" -- which used to mean somebody who believed in liberty. Today it means the flummery of the Mommy State. Socialism is very appealing to Mommies, Would-be Mommies, and Those Who Still Need their Mommies. But of course it's government of the scammers, by the scammers, and for the scammers.

    no for michigan

I find this a very disturbing law for mi. There is more police out on the roads now than ever. So your chances are even greater to receive tickets. And now some courts do not waver points anymore. For me,trying to avoid a collision with a truck that did not see me,because i was in his blind spot, and had nowhere else to go but on the side walk. So i speed up 5 miles over the speed limit to avoid accident. Now i received the points. And on another occasion, the police sit under a bridge hideing, and where they know you will pick up speed a little going down hill, that is another 2 points. And too pay this drivers responsibility fee on top of that. I am sorry, but i do not want to conduct my business in michigan anymore. And i know plenty of other people who agree with me on this, and will let other people know how corrupt michigan laws are.

    Its Time ,Yes!

You hit it right on the spot.!!I owe 4,500 and not 1 alcohol offense.Eligible for a restricted license only if I pay the responsibility fees first..Let me guess, stop driving suspended right??I donnt think so Granholm!!Gotta work in this world..If I accidently kill someone while driving suspended..Who is at fault here??Sounds unsensitive,but..with a clean criminal record I would only do 5 to 8 years prison time for involenterry manslaughter..The victoms family can sue me too, right? So what..they'll get a judgment but no money from somebody like me whos been destroyed by the State of MI Rresponsibility Fees!OH yea,The victoms family would have to stand in line with the MI treasury Dept. too because they would want their 4800.00 out of me first I bet!Get the petition going!!!!!Call Steve Wilson at WXYZ Channel 7 Detroit,Call WJBK Fox2 Detroit Channel 2 "Problem solvers".This law is destroying middle to low income hard working Michigan people!!!!This is "Double Dipping" on behalf of the State of Michigan.Who runs the courts? State of Mi!So after I see a judge on a matter, pay fines,go to jail, pay court costs,do community service, and counseling, and 2 years probation,I Still get penalized all over again???By who? The Treasury Dept.???Those Bitches who voted for this law must be on some goood crack!!

    Screwed

I recently went for my review, after 2 years plus w/o a license. The interviwer asked questions that were not even relevant to my case, such as were my children born in wedlock? I was living with my sis at the time due to personal and health problems. He wanted to know if they drank, how much, how often and if there was any alcohol in the house. He had me so flabbergasted I could not even answer some of the questions with any intelligence. If they decide to grant me a restricted liscence It has to be with an ignition interlock which costs 200 or more to install with a monthly upkeep fee. Then in one year you start all over again. 125.00 for another drug and alcohol eval., 150 to get the interlock results for your interview, etc. When does it stop? I am disabled, unable to work and have no source of income. I need my license to go to my Drs. appointments. I have complied, paid all the fines and am still being treated like a common criminal. I have beat Hep c and cancer but the state of Michigan, I can't win. Enough is enough!

    WTF?

I Think it is a good law to have in place but the penalties..... are completely unconstitutional and insane. Good example of equalities. A 10 year old child walks into a store and pulls a 5 cent gumball off the shelf and puts it in his mouth. Grabs a pack of baseball cards and pays for them. Walks out of the store, first step he takes out of the store he is tackled thrown in handcuffs, arrested and sentanced to 15 years in prison. Yes it is a good law, but the punishment needs to be adjusted seriously.

    Double Jeopardy

My husband is a long haul truck driver and over the course of two years he has gotten some points from other states. He is on the road 6 days a week. Of course the cops like to pull over truckers for 5 or less over. Truckers are easy targets. I am unemployed (go figure!) and we are barely getting by. Then my husband gets slapped with this responsibility fee. We are having to take this fee out of our mortgage payment. Now we are behind in our payments just after catching up. I am done with this state! I put my house up for sale today. This is the straw that broke the camels back. As far as I know, MI is the only state that has this double jeopardy law. I cannot believe how greedy this is compared to others. I am outta here. Everyone should follow because it wont be long before it is a ghost state. Last one out turn off the lights.
