2011 House Bill 4624: Let Detroit keep imposing higher utility tax (House Roll Call 158)
Passed 57 to 52 in the House on June 1, 2011, to allow Detroit to continue to uniquely impose an income tax of 5 percent utility tax on telephone service, natural gas and electricity. This is one of many laws that provides unique privileges or powers for "a city with a population greater than 750,000." The bill would lower that to 600,000 to accommodate Detroit's ongoing population decline.

Again, taxes drive people away. So do high prices. Imposing higher utility fees on the people who can least afford it is both economically wrong and morally wrong. As the scripture says, "Claiming to be wise they have become fools." Romans 1:22

It's bad enough that residents have to suffer through rate increases imposed by the MPSC without adding additional taxes. All tax increases should be approved by the voters.
