2010 Senate Bill 1267: Impose 7/8th cent gas tax for non-road spending (Senate Roll Call 417)
Passed 37 to 0 in the Senate on September 16, 2010, to continue to impose a 7/8ths cent-per-gallon gas and refined petroleum tax scheduled to expire on Dec. 31, 2010. The tax was originally levied for the cleanup of underground fuel tanks, but was diverted to other government spending following a 2004 “fund raid” enacted to avoid state spending cuts and reforms, and continues to be used for that purpose. The bill would extend the tax through 2012.

That's right! It's their money and they want it now-and forever. I wasn't surprised my lame duck legislator voted for it. What did surprise me is that he didn't try to raid it for some ethanol or soy diesel boondoggle.

All taxes and fees "dedicated " or "earmarked" for specific purposes are eventually stolen by legislators, and all levies originally meant to sunset or expire will be extended or made permanent. Silly taxpayers, once the state has "your" money, it's not yours anymore. It's "theirs" and they're not giving it up, ever.

It already breaks the Michigan Constitution - all gas tax must be used for roads. Either re-establish the leaking UST program, or do away with the tax. The clean up program has not been accepting new claims in a while. re-authorize the refined petroleum fund to help clean the sites!! Don;t keep it in limbo like it is currently.
