2011 House Bill 4466: Fine union for illegal teacher strike

- Introduced by Rep. Paul Scott (R) on March 22, 2011, to authorize fines of $5,000 per day against the Michigan Education Association or other school employee union for each day of an illegal strike. The bill would also allow consolidating the hearings at which fines may be assessed against illegally striking teachers; under current law the need for hundreds of individual hearings means that teacher fines are rarely assessed. The sponsor says the intention is $5,000 per teacher per day.

1) Re: 2011 House Bill 4466 (Fine union for illegal teacher strike ) by marcysmith on January 8, 2013A provision in state law that says if a college teacher strike is or has become a clear and present danger to the health or safety of the public, the mayor can seek a court injunction to stop it. However, this option seems unlikely, because the provision does not cover public welfare, which would be more germane for the strike.
Maintaining solidarity among the ranks is another union strike method. This generally refers to morale among the project manager. The strike simply won't work if disgruntled unionists return to work before a contract settlement is reached. For example, management can undermine solidarity by offering a better deal to some workers than others.
