- Introduced by Rep. Rick Jones (R) on March 10, 2010, to prohibit the use of a welfare recipient’s “bridge card” to buy alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets, or withdraw cash from an ATM. “Bridge cards” are debit cards that have replaced food stamps and cash welfare payments. Under the bill, the welfare benefits could only be used for rent, personal toiletries, food, clothing and child care services.

this is not a good idea.
This 'feel-good' legislation appears misguided: how can a recipient pay a phone bill, electric bill, rent, etc if they cannot withdraw cash from a Bridge card? Suppose they need gas to get to a part-time job? There are a whole slew of problems with this idea!
