- Introduced by Sen. John Pappageorge (R) on September 22, 2009, to establish a new system of vehicle registration system that would replace license-plate tabs and paper registration certificates with an electronic data base that could check current vehicle registration status, with new plates issued every five years for a $10 fee. The bill would also eliminate a statutory requirement for one Secretary of State office in each county and in certain cities, and increase the fine for unregistered vehicles to $200.

1) Re: 2009 Senate Bill 859 (Replace annual license plate tabs with electronic database ) by gypsy on September 29, 2009I pay $76.00 per year now for license plate renewal. This bill says the fee will be $10.00 every five years. It says it will eliminate the need for a Secretary of States office in each county. If the elimination of those offices saves the state the loss of the present license renewal fees, this sounds like a good deal for vehicle owners.

For the roughly 7.5 million privately registered vehicles in Michigan this means that every 5 years citizens will be burdened with an additional $75 million in taxes and we will have to dispose of 7.5 million plates. This does not sound like the economic or environmentally responsible thing which government should be doing. What problem is this initiative trying to solve? And what percentage of the 7.5 million vehicles are affected by this problem?
