It is easy to "demand" solutions. That's why I don't. I don't
"demand" increased security, I suggest it as a much safer means of
attempting to keep gun violence from happening on a college campus than
allowing students to arm themselves. If forcing airline passengers to
submit to invasive bodily searches in order to prevent terrorism is not
infringing on our basic freedoms, then barring guns from a college
campus is not. Should we allow all passengers to carry guns on
airplanes? Would that prevent terrorism better than "increased
security"? Some would say yes. I would not care to be on a plane when a
gunfight broke out.

There is not much more we can do to prevent crime than what we
are doing, this is true. But that does not mean we should disrupt
society and decend into anarchy, allowing every individual to become
his own police force.

I have no problem with the 2nd amendment,
and obviously our founders believed every citizen should have the right
to own and bear firearms. But reasonable restrictions do not deny us
those basic rights.

Ironically, I view those who would take an
ideology to the extreme as intellectually dishonest, trying to fit
reality into their tightly restricted thoughts.

A college campus
is much different than a Wal Mart or a Wendy's, in the amount of time
spent there, the reasons for being there, the mix of people there, and
the dynamics involved with the people there.

It is easy to demand solutions, it is not so easy to create
solutions. Demanding "increased security," to create safety is the easiest
thing in the world to do. It is not so easy to create a safer environment
without infringing on basic freedoms. There are laws against theft, assault,
rape, murder. What exactly can law enforcement do to prevent these crimes
beyond what they already do? The fact of the matter is criminals intent on committing
crimes do not care about the laws prohibiting their actions. Laws against guns
on campus prohibit law abiding citizens from carrying guns. They do nothing to
prevent criminals from bringing guns on campus, into classrooms.

Owning and bearing arms may not magically transform people
into saints. Historically however, more guns have led to less crime, not more
crime. Ultimately these specious arguments surrounding concealed carry on
campus are simply intellectually dishonest. A college campus is in no way
different from the Walmart across the street or the Wendy's down the block
where people qualified to do so can carry concealed.
