Oh this is pathetic. Most people cannot even do elementary math and now we want to reduce the requirements for a scholarship? My husband and I need to help our kids with their 4th and 5th grade mathematics because their mother does not know how to do it. If you want to apply for a scholarship you need to prove that the scholarship is going to be put to good use. If you cannot complete 3 years of math, you should not receive a scholarship because you have not proved to me that you are willing to put in the work required. The education system in this day and age has plummetted to a new low. Kids are rewarded for effort not results, I have a C student and the "teachers" were very proud of the effort he puts in, although the results suck (personally speaking). If so much "effort" is being put in his grades should be improving. I am not one for giving trophies, or hand outs to people that are not willing to work hard for a positive result.

Yep, let's just dumb down the prerequisites for college even more. Of course the student will have to take remedial labs when they get to college but what the heck; it's only taxpayer money being wasted.
The discipline that is involved in higher mathematics is essential to any core curriculum contrary to what so many say about never needing to know any of it when they get a "real" job. Don't believe it. I use Algebra and Geometry all the time in my quilting. I have helped many kids with their homework because their parents, who didn't bother with anything beyond basic math, couldn't.
So, I would like to see 4 years of mathematics required for any State/taxpayer funded college monetary awards. Along with 4 years of Literature, Science, Geopolitical courses. In other words, if you aren't serious about a college education then attend a trrade or technical school and stop wasting my money.

Could it be there are not enough teachers in public schools capable of teaching math?
There are very few professions that don't require some understanding of mathematics,
and I think the purpose of the scholarship is to bring those back to Michigan.
