Private security forces = the big-dollar solution.  Instead, why not
simply allow adult students and faculty who have CCW permits (known as
CPLs here in Michigan) to carry their weapons on campus as they do
everywhere else?  One could also solicit said CPL holders and gun
owners to VOLUNTEER for a certain amount of security duty, so that the
only thing the school would be on the hook for is training.  Troy, MI,
has a top-notch fire department, and it is all volunteer.  Money
normally spent on wages is diverted to better training and equipment. 
There's NO reason that this couldn't be done for campus security as
well.
