I hope there is a revison and attention given to the non violent offenders. My daughter, Christian Delashmit is an inmate at Huron Falley Womens complex. She has problems with drugs and and abuseing her own perscribed medication.she has never hurt anyone, never found guilty of selling or manufacturing just hurting herself.Upon entering the penal system she was still under the infulence and had trouble adjusting.I now feel she has changed and has a new and better attitude. She has had to endure her son going thru the loss of his father with out her.Her husband has undergone openheart surgery, her husband lost 2 of his children with in two weeks apart. She was was not able to be there for either of them. She has been enrolled in school and is attending the AA meetings.I hear a new message in her voice. She was not able to have anyone available at her parole hearing to show she has support.I live 12 hours away and was in the hospitol at the time. Her husband was just recovering from his open heart surgery. All of her friend and family live 12 hours away from her.She does have support and will have people to help her when she is released. She was not even able to discuss her situation at the parole hearing. She was in her med lines waiting on her meds and had received one and was waiting for another when a nurse ? acussed her of holding her meds.....and gave her a ticket ...when Christie replied she was waiting for her other meds the nurse gave her another ticket. This was the nite before her hearing...the nurse then made the comment she was going to be sure my daughter floped. My daughter did not hear say this but others did and told my daughter about it.My daughter has asked that this be investigated. My daughter needs to be realeased and be able to be there for her husband and son.She is not a violent offeneder and has served her time and learned a valuable lesson.I would not ask for her parole to be reconsidered if I did not feel she needed to be allowed to come home.At least I know she is alive and well as long as she is there. It has been a sense of peace for me to know she is ok.I do feel that she has changed and would love to have her home.I am not well and my health is detereaging quickly.I would love to be able to spend time with  her.If she was a threat to society it would be different....if she has  hurt someone it would be different. The only one she has hurt is herself.I feel you need to review her case and that of others that are not a threat to society. It is a major cost to your government......I also feel that it would be better to have a a program for those with drug issues that would address their illness.Locking them up with volent criminals is not the answer. It does change their attitude..their speech...they do begin to feel like a "con"  I hope she can be the kind soft gentle person she has always been.I see you have a new bill waiting to be voted on  regardind time serverd. Most all states have that program.I think it is a great incentive for the non violent offenders especially.I do hope you pass this bill and do so soon.I wish you and your state well.I know you have sufferned dearly during this recession.I have spent many hours and days in the northern part of the state while visiting my daughter.I find  it a beautiful place and enjoy its natural beauty. Thanks for taking the time to read my note.I do feel if you act on the new legislation regarding the "time served" issues it would help you save money and make room for those that really need to be locked up.

Again thank you

Sincerly

Joyce Price

Mother of Christian Delashmit

I certainly hope that this one doesn't just sit in the committee.

the last time it passed the house and then went on to the senate, where it sat for committee review.

The senate judiciary committee is Senators Kuipers (C), Cropsey (VC), Sanborn, Patterson, Stamas, Whitmer (MVC) Clarke, and Basham
and we all know that Kuipers and Cropsey are NOT pro prison reform.  And they will do everything they can to undermine a possible return of what an inmate used to be able to do.

The revisions in this bill DO NOT guarantee an inmate parole, they do offer an inmate the ability to a FAIR review.
I've been at a few parole hearings and it is like the inmate is on trial again, again, and again.
In all honesty, it won't make much difference if this passes if the parole board does not change its behavior.
In recent months the inmates that are being granted parole have been granted parole before, in some cases several times.  It is what you call a "revolving door".  But, that is ok, because it guarantees that prison workers will be employed.

When a person is tried by a prosecutor, found guilty by a jury/judge, and then sentenced by a judge to a specific amount of minimum to a maximum number of years, their job ends.  Well, one would think so.  In a lot of cases, the judge and/or prosecutor contacts the parole board to PERSUADE them to not parole the inmate.  And they don't.  Aha!  A second sentence.  Even if the inmate is remorseful, corrected the behavior that got them there, taken ALL and then some, required programs, got good work reviews, etc., IT DOESN'T MATTER.

No matter what tools the parole board uses, their decisions will still be the same.  "This is the way we have always done it", seems to be a mantra here in Michigan.  One which already has gotten the auto companies in deep trouble.  And now we hear about how the state budget is at a critical point.  It wouldn't be if the parole board and the legislators would do their job and quit running for office every single day of the year.

Kuipers and Cropsey both represent areas where there are a number of prisons, which in turn employ LOTS of voters.  They should really concentrate on diversifying the job market in their areas and not be so dependent on one employer, sound familiar (automotive).
It will choke you in the end.

And if they don't do something about releasing people from prison when they're supposed to, they may suffer the same fate as California, where the Federal Courts have stepped in and MADE them release people.

You go Michigan!
