Introduced by Rep. Paul Opsommer (R) on March 25, 2009, to authorize a non-refundable income tax credit of up to $500, for up to 20 percent of cost of installing a solar, wind or hydroenergy system used to supply energy to a principal residence or residential rental property unit that is part of a “net metering” plan in which a customer both generates some electricity which is fed back into the power grid, and also buys some power from the utility. The tax credit would also apply to money spent on an active solar, passive solar, wind, or hydroenergy system used to supply energy to the dwelling.

Why is the tax credit needed if they will be selling power to the utilities? Won't the sales be enough incentive? The "tax credit" is just another subsidy. If you solar and wind power are economically feasible, it won't need to be subsidized. If,however it isn't economically feasible and legislators are trying to get on the Gore or green bandwagon then taxpayers money-in the form of tax credits-will be their answer.
