2009 House Bill 4615 (Mandate “circulating nurse” in operating rooms )

Introduced by Rep. Lesia Liss (D) on March 18, 2009, to mandate that health care providers have a “circulating nurse” in the operating room when surgery is underway. The bill defines “circulating nurse” as a “registered professional nurse who is responsible for coordinating all nursing care, patient safety needs, and the needs of the surgical team in the operating room during an invasive or operative procedure”. .

I think it is a good idea. The circulating nurse needs to be there in the best interest for the patient. What if something goes wrong? I think the client always needs to have an advocate.

Of course you need a circulating room nurse present. I think it is important to introduce this legislation because of the recent trend of free standing clinics performing more and more surgeries. It may be standard practice in a hospital to have a circulating nurse, but we cannot assume that these clinics operate (sorry for the pun) under the same standards unless it is in fact mandatory.
