Introduced by Rep. Coleman Young (D) on June 3, 2008, to prohibit a city from placing a residential property on a “demolition list” if the taxes on the property are paid up, subject to a $20,000 fine payable to the state.
Referred to the House Intergovernmental, Urban And Regional Affairs Committee on June 3, 2008.
1) Wrong! [by Anonymous Citizen on June 10, 2008] This penalizes neighborhoods! This bill says that, as long as I pay my property taxes, I can allow my building to fall into complete disrepair and blight, and no one can do anything about it. That's not fair to the neighbors! For many of these properties, since the value is so low, the taxes aren't much. Blight is contagious. As long as the city follows due process and notifies the owner, it should be able to complete a demolition order on a dangerous building. Reply
