Introduced by Sen. Samuel B. Thomas, III (D) on September 18, 2007, to impose a $100 civil fine on a person who drives while using “an electronic device that has a screen and a keyboard” to send text messages, enter data or play a game. The violation would be a “secondary” one, meaning that a driver could not be stopped just for this, but if stopped for some other violation (or is in an accident) this one could be tacked on.
Referred to the Senate Energy Policy & Public Utilities Committee on September 18, 2007.
1) Lets Try by Anonymous Citizen on September 25, 2007 something new. It doesn't matter if you text, drink, fart talk, type or whatever. If you don't harm anyone else or their property then there is no law broken. I think some old dead white guys came up with this novel idea a little over two hundred years ago. Reply
2) Ticket by Anonymous Citizen on September 24, 2007 Why not write the ticket for texting while driving? You people come up with laws and then want a two for one deal. The police will pull you over for something and then write 2 tickets. If you are texting while driving you deserve a ticket as far as I am concerned. Besides this is how the seat belt law started now you can be pulled over for a seat belt, so why not just make it illegal to text while driving and then get it over with. Reply
3) We Don't Need Any More Laws by Anonymous Citizen on September 24, 2007 If you crash because you were doing something stupid like texting then there are laws for this. What are you guys gonna do, write a law for every stupid thing? How about an eating while driving? Putting on makeup? Changing radio stations? here's one you control freaks will like, lighting a cig while driving. How about peeing while driving? Lots of long haul truckers do this. Maybe then we can get into things like thinking about your mother in law while driving, surely this is a cause of road rage. The only thing this proves is that we need a PART TIME and MUCH SMALLER LEGISLATURE NOW Reply
