Introduced by Sen. Michael Prusi (D) on March 1, 2007, to postpone for one year the imposition of new water ballast discharge regulations on ocean-going ships that enter Michigan waters. Note: The regulations went into effect on Jan. 1, 2007, and most shippers have announced that they will not dock in Michigan ports as a result, because the technologies available to meet the regulations have not been approved. The shippers would instead dock in Canadian ports, and the ballast water discharges would still enter Great Lakes waters.
Referred to the Senate Natural Resources & Environmental Affairs Committee on March 1, 2007.
1) delay by jmangan on March 6, 2007 Much damage has already been done to the Great Lakes by invasive species being brought into this eco-system. We should not delay putting in effect these regulations. Michigan must lead the way in protecting our natural resources. Shippers will quickly come into compliance when they realize our commitment, and other states and Canada will follow our lead, if we show the strength of our convictions. Reply
