• Introduced by Rep. Rick Jones (R) on July 19, 2007, to allow a person who does not already have a license to possess a particular pistol to present the pistol to the local law enforcement agency for the “safety inspection” required by state law, if the person gets the license within 30 days afterwards. If the local police have reason to believe the person is not eligible to possess a pistol (due to criminal record or other legal disability), they could seize it until the person shows that he or she is ineligible. If police have no reason to think the person is ineligible, they would be required to inspect the pistol, return it, and issue a 30-day temporary license that would allow the person to apply for the regular license. The bill is intended to address the situation of people who may have acquired an unlicensed pistol through inheritance or other means.
