Introduced by Rep. Leslie Mortimer (R) on March 23, 2006, to exempt from the Proposal A taxable value “pop-up” homestead property that is purchased by a person age 65 or older. The “pop-up” is where the state equalized value (market value) of newly-sold property becomes the basis for its property tax assessment, rather than the capped “taxable value” of the previous owner, which is lower.
Referred to the House Tax Policy Committee on March 23, 2006.
1) Admission of a faulty system by Anonymous Citizen on March 28, 2006 I think this is a clear indication that Rep. Mortimer and others believe the whole pop up scheme has major faults. What is clearly a burden on 65+ year olds is also a burden on newlyweds or anyone else. The whole idea that my neighbor can pay 30 or 40 percent more in property tax than me with the same house is absurd. Reply
