Introduced by Rep. Edward Gaffney (R) on April 21, 2005, to prohibit a dealer from selling new motorcycles for use on the street that produce a maximum noise exceeding 80 decibels (instead of the current 83 decibels).
Referred to the House Transportation Committee on April 21, 2005.
1) Forget the Pipes by Anonymous Citizen on May 6, 2005 I know that this is a common belief in the motorcycle world. I don't agree. Excessively loud pipes are a nuisance to everyone.
If we kept our pipes to a reasonable level, there'd be no need for this kind of legislation. Unfortunately, some guys just aren't happy until their bike sounds like it pulling a chain of M-80's down the street.
Next thing you know, legislators who have never ridden a motorcycle and who know zip about engine mechanics are writing laws that overreach and end up causing new problems. (It now is illegal in Colorado Springs, Colorado to ride with any non-OEM exhaust, regardless of decible level.)

2) concerned by Anonymous Citizen on May 6, 2005 It's pretty obvious that the writer of this bill does not understand the saying "loud pipes save lives". Reply
