Introduced by Rep. Larry Julian (R) on July 6, 2004, to require sellers of cigarettes over the Internet to acquire from the buyer an official document demonstrating that the buyer is of legal age; to include on all documents related to the sale the seller's valid Michigan sales tax registration number, business name and address, and a statement as to whether all sales and tobacco taxes have been paid; and to place a "CIGARETTES" label on the outside of shipping packages, with a notice that "the seller has reported your name and address and the sale of these cigarettes to our state tax collection agency, and you are legally responsible for all applicable unpaid state taxes".
Referred to the House Regulatory Reform Committee on July 6, 2004.
2) Internet taxes on cigarettes by Anonymous Citizen on August 21, 2004 Is our State Legislature now trying to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court nexus standards? Add this to the new law that is tempting Michigan citizens of majority age to become common criminals or felons for wanting to enjoy their tobacco products without footing the bill for the State's budgetary woes (not to mention putting brick & mortar tobacconists out of business, subjecting the same to more theft, promoting "big-time" smuggling, etc). Let's just erect barbed-wire around our border, shall we? Reply

This type of bill would need to be at the federal level to do anything. Reply
